What I grow , but others can’t get your hands on ….

My T. speciosum was picked up from a plant stall on Totnes Market one afternoon, growing in a pot and with a couple of shoots it was planted the next morning and grows like mad.

You could well be right there, there are certain things which do not store well as you say. Erythroniums can be a bit iffy too if dried out. I would like to split my Tropaeolum but cannot for the life of me remember where I planted it but I know where it comes up, and that is not always in the same place is not where I planted it! I seem to recall there is a plant called the obedient plant, Tropaeolum Speciosum is definitely not it! More apt to be called the disobedient plant

Why steal it? I want to continue doing business with the young chap whose stall it is and grows his own plants.
Stealing plants is a big problem for Botanic gardens and specialist collections. Especially Alpines apparently.

 

Yes, I remember seeing all the warnings at Wisely in the alpine houses. I wanted to try to take some close up photos of them, and was terrified I'd set something off!

 

It can be a problem in private gardens too! I used to open mine for a local plant swap and despite asking people just to to ask if they wanted a division or cuttings, I'd find them happily ploughing through the border, secateurs or trowel and plastic bag in hand, often trampling something precious in the process.

 

I've had a few rarities over the years.

I'm sure that I still have seed somewhere but whether they're still viable I don't know. Might try this year though.

Tricyrtis macropoda was another fave.........

2. Musschia wollastonii
3. Solanum pyracanthus and laciniatum
4. Caiophora hibiscifolia

I might do a bit of growing this year although they are old seeds.

 

Hello longk, nice to see you back. You've just reminded me that there's an envelope in the fridge from 2018 containing leftovers of all sorts of goodies I'll have to dig it out and see what's there!

My grandmother did this every time we took her to the glasshouses in the park of a not-far-away-town ... and because she did it I did it too, and we'd compare the cuttings we'd 'taken' after we got back to the car.
My father used to tell her if she got caught he'd disown her, but she just rolled her eyes

 

I may have been the only person on here that had Leonotis nepetifolia last year........



Or rather, my Dad did as I grew them in his garden. They did well topping over two metres and lots of side shoots. Bloomed from July until the frosts.

 

It only costs a bit of time and compost!

 

My grandmother was like that. A very religious and self-righteous woman in general, but when visiting a National Trust garden the secateurs came out.
