I have ground elder growing through other plants where I can't spray it or dig it out. The roots break easily because the ground is rock hard due to the prolonged dry weather. Many years ago I would have used 'tumbleweed gel' which came in a bottle with a brush in it's lid (like overgrown typpex!) and was glyphosate based. What is the modern recommended equivalent product, if there is one?

I can't find it online now but used to buy Roundup Gel, you dabbed it onto weeds. You could make something similar by thickening up glyphosate with wall paper paste, dab it on with a small sponge or brush. Wear gloves!

Don't use a paste with anti-black spot stuff you get in damp places, name escapes me at the moment.

        Ammonium Benzachloride ?
Guess you could use a potato starch or a gelatine sachet. One can still buy Gloy Paste which is starch based.

Thanks for the suggestions. Roundup gel seems to be still advertised in various places so I will try that first and see how I get on. Wish me luck!
Palustris, I think you mean 'mildew'.

I made wallpaper paste with corn starch and will use that to make my own weed paint.

Thank you for starting this thread @Notwellygood !!

We just use a small soft artists type brush and carefully paint the liquid weedkiller direct onto the leaves of the target weeds when they are so close to other good plants.

Just hold back or cover any nearby good plants and soil against splashes.
If you do catch some other leaves by mistake then pick them off to prevent any absorption,

Found that SBK is one of the most effective, widely available.

" SBK, specifically SBK Brushwood Killer, is a selective weedkiller often used to control tough weeds like ground elder. It's effective because it's a systemic weedkiller, meaning it moves down through the plant to kill the roots. SBK is known for its effectiveness against woody and broad-leaved weeds, including ground elder, and is safe for grass. "

Do check the tiny print for active ingredient. The Round Up brand was reformulated and 'repackaged' to look like the original glyphosate, but was actually based on a totally ineffective 'acid' derived from geraniums!
