I didn't do anything in the garden, grass not growing :dbgrtmb: Still too cold and early to plant out the tender stuff, greenhouse shut up.

    Its just not gardening weather.

Oh I did pot on a couple of palms that I grew from seed last year.
Bought some more compost, 50% peat and moved that into the garden, you can see I'm scratching now.

I can't believe I'm saying it, but it was warm and sunny again today! So had to douse the greenhouse and newly planted stuff using a hose - my water butts are pretty much empty. Got another barrow load of well rotted manure onto a border to help the newly put out Hesperis seedlings.
Not keen to do too much as spent the whole bank holiday weekend chain sawing up ash and willow brash and feeding a monster chipper with them.

I've been watering pots and vulnerable plants again today and our butts are beginning to empty.
Although I find it a faff I'm collecting grey water in a washing up bowl in the sink and using that for watering as well.
I have also taken the precaution of moving my (fortunately light weight) potting table away from underneath the soon to be felled tree and moved half a dozen pots away as well. Anything else underneath that might get trashed doesn't really matter. We've also just realized that our phone line goes right through the middle of the tree so do hope nothing happens to that!
        Tomorrow's going to be interesting.

Weeded a few pots with verbena bonariences in and topped them up with fresh compost, watered the polyanthus around the path and more pots.

Second night of tomato plants being outside in cold frame. Checked on them at 5am this morning- temp read 10.2C . This was taken over the fleece cover, so hoping the plants themselves will be a little warmer in their pots.
it may be worth while taking a look inside our shed to find if we still have some damp course membrane left over, to throw over the frame for tonight "cannot do any harm and would make me feel better"

I sallied forth full of good intentions to spray brambles, only to be distracted by the need to water. By the time I had unraveled the hose and reconnected the various lengths to make it long enough to reach the bottom of the garden, I was bushed.
After a break, I forced myself outside and sorted the chili plants into 3 lots, 5 for myself, 5 for my son-in-law, the leftovers are for the community swap shop. I potted on my tomato plants. sowed some sweetcorn, cucumbers, cornichons, okra, marrow, courgettes and luffa. Only 2/3 seeds of each but it still takes time. I found a packet of tomato seeds which I think may not be viable but sowed a couple to see, I watered the potatoes I planted the day before and the containers then decided I had done enough. ie. I could barely stand up straight or walk!
I slept the sleep of a tired gardener.

So yesterday I sowed some carrots directly outside in containers, I used some old seed which I think expired in 12/23, which doesn't sound great, so thinking rather than waste these seeds, see if they take on the next couple of weeks, if they don't I will just overlay with fresher seeds I have.

So to avoid carrot fly where can I get fine netting from please?

I also planted out some new salad potatoes.

@lizzie27 As a child we had in the garden an enormous water butt that collected the bath water and sink water from the bathroom. This was used as you said grey water for the garden. I always assumed that everybody had this as well. We were always careful with water. My father was in the army and a posting to Hong Kong made us very conscious of the use of water. Every day water would be turned off for some hours so you really did have to plan ahead. When washing things like salad leaves, carrots and potatoes I do then put the water out around selected plants.

A very productive morning after yesterday not so. Met some of the garden club at the village hall. We dug up all the daffodils from the tubs and containers. Mixed in some new compost and feed and then planted out different plugs that were very well rooted. All given a good watering. Members volunteer for a day each week to water them all. If they are away then they swop with somebody else.
Then back home planted out some peas, watered them and put around them sticks to keep the pigeons away.
Sowed more peas and dwarf french beans in pots. No point sowing directly as we never see them again.

So true @Goldenlily26 ! And you have to watch for the fiendish hose bashing the tops off precious plants as you use it! If I had a million pounds, and the foresight, I would have had lots of water piping laid underground, so I could connect up with only short hoses everywhere. Ah well...
I have been moving my potatoes and other plants in 30l pots to a safe place as National Grid are going to go through my garden to get to pylons for fixing next week, and all my pots have been steadily encroaching on the access route. I must admit I had more to move than I had realised!

You could try a garden centre, or you could use horticultural fleece.

I'm still just potting up, or potting on exiting plants that are mostly tender and will always live in pots.

Oh, that's sad. Last legs, eh?

:biggrin::biggrin: I jest! Though I do like the idea of plants deciding to exit stage left.

Now, I like ivy as much as the next person, but I was slightly alarmed to find a strand growing on the inside of the back wall of the garage when I was up a ladder this morning getting something from a top shelf. :hate-shocked: I have no access to the outside of one side or the back as these are in other people's gardens, so I can't control (or indeed even see) what is grown up the walls unfortunately.

I got the last of the old wooden border that was containing my raised border that runs around the back and part way up the sides. Then laid the cement blocks to replace the last bit.

The boards had rotted. Everywhere but where the d'd rebar was. What a tug of war!

And like others here trotted pots back inside the greenhouses.
