    @CarolineL
    Nick Macer at Pan Global Plants says it's taken -14 °C at his nursery and he's grown it outside since 2008. Like D imperialis it tends to flower late Novemberish so often frost takes the flowers.
    I got the impression that he grows it mainly for foliage as it's only flowered a couple of times for him.

    Hmm. That's the problem with a lot of plants I have fancied growing @NigelJ ! Far too late flowering. My gingers are a classic example.

      Sorry, I told a porky as I jut found where I bought the Salvia farinacea ‘as a plant in October 2020. Here it is between the rocking chair and the house. It gets very tall and is unruly and I have to cut it back a couple of times each year.

        D. imperialis has always been hardy with me but I gave up because I couldn't put up with watching the flower buds getting frosted every year.

        I only grow Gingers that flower early.:biggrin:

          Yes I used to grow it from seed in my bedding plant days, its a nice plant but I dont think it survives winter here.

            @CarolineL I find the same thing with some plants, hedychiums do tend to flower but not every year. With Zingiber I've got a couple; Z mioga flowered last year, Z chrysanthum I tried outside but it was very slow into growth after a cold spring so it is now in a pot back in the greenhouse and healthier looking.
            Dahlia imperialis has flowered for me, but the flowers were mid November and were so high as to be barely visible and I suspect that D tamaulipana will be similar so flowers every 7 to 10 years and the rest of the time foliage.
            I find cold springs to be as much a problem as October frosts.

            Lots of tempting plants at B&Q currently. I couldn't resist this Verbascum. I moved it a short distance to take a photo and when I went to replace it a marmalade hoverfly was in the space waiting for its return.

                Morrisons had a whole rack of heavily discounted bedding yesterday. Each pack had some plants missing, but the remaining ones looking green and healthy, and they were reduced 90%. So for a total of £1.10, I ended up with 3 dahlias, 2 coreopsis and 4 verbena.

                  These arrived on Friday, Gabriel Oak and Roald Dahl. They'll be planted today, now that I've decided where they're going! The lawn has been spared @ViewAhead :biggrin:.

                        Is that a trailing one, @Victoria, or a climbing one waiting for support?

                        Climbing. It has one little yellow lightly scented flower ...

                        I planted a Geranium 'Rosebud' in the front of the pot to add interest.
