It seems really early for ant swarms, I thought it tended to be July? Or am I thinking of flying ants? Anyway, enough to give you the eegie beegies :yikes:. Hope you’ve got them sorted :fingers crossed:

A very good morning one and all. I didn't bring attention to yesterday and the date but I hope anyone who suffers from paraskevidekatriaphobia managed to cope with any stresses. It would appear @lizzie27 that you were definitely unlucky! I hope you have got the pesky ants under control now.

Morning @Ladybird4 and all those to follow.

Thankfully, all the ants seem to have disappeared this morning. I tiptoed into the living room and peered behind the curtains, which we'd draped over the chairs and - not a sign! I'll act on Obelix's and Busy-Lizzie's suggestions of oil of cloves and get some asap. Might be cheaper than the ant gel anyway.

We haven't yet had the predicted thunder/torrential rainstorm although it looked quite black earlier. I can even see some blue sky appearing. Hope nobody was unduly affected by bad weather.

        Have a good day everybody.

          Morning all.

Glad the ants have dispersed @lizzie27! I’ve noticed a couple of patches of tell-tale sandy soil between some of the patio slabs, so maybe the ants are early this year. My Mum always used to go out with a kettle of boiling water and pour over the ants! Childhood memory there!

I’ve collected my shopping, plus nipped in for some croissants for brekky. Hoping it will brighten-up later, or at least for the breeze to drop so I can start hardening-off my sunflowers and cosmos from the greenhouse.

          Have a lovely weekend all.

Morning all. 19C, with blue sky and a light breeze here, so I'm sitting under a birch tree during a break in the singing.

Rained here in Devon during the night. Quite heavily at times, and just after we had gone to bed, we could hear a few rumbles of thunder. I moved my trays of seedlings to the window sill, and on top of the bins, just as well, the trays they were standing on were full of water this morning.
We have woken up to warmth and sunshine, although there are some clouds lurking about. OH is very relieved as he managed to ‘repair’ the lawnmower yesterday. The belt had become loose and he has tightened it up. Says it’s working better than it ever did! Shame the bodywork is now rusting badly. It will probably be able to limp along until we decide whether to splash out on a new one, or try and organise someone to come in and doing the mowing for us. Not getting any younger or fitter, and the slopes in the garden are quite hard work.

Morning everyone, we went to see Just for one day at the Shaftesbury theatre last night. It's the story of live aid which almost unbelievably was 40 years ago this July. They used a lot of the music from the day but didn't try to just replicate the show. There was a lot of effing and blinding from Bob Geldof's character but that's how he was. They highlighted a lot of the difficulties of the whole project. I had forgotten that in fact there was food in the country but it was the corrupt dictator that stopped it getting through. So they had to not only raise money to buy more food and other aid but create a whole new logistics and distribution system.
It was raining when we came out and when we got home but it didn't last and I don't think we got that much.
Very bad night for sleeping very humid and not helped by a helicopter circulating over the A41 at 1:30 this morning.

It is weird how flying ants all take off on the same day. I found a humungous ants nest under a wall edging stone last week. I left it exposed hoping to see a flock of birds come down to enjoy the feast of eggs but didn't see a single one. Some of the eggs had hatched into flying ants and the next day the remaining eggs had been moved further along the wall.

Yesterday was miserable again, overcast, intermittent downpours and a really cold wind. I did a load of washing last night thinking it would dry outside today but it is pouring with rain again. I had planned to go shopping but not so sure now. It sounds as if Kent has had it very badly.

I went for it and made the potato rossti quiche. Much effort as the first thing I had to do was brave the elements to go down the garden to find my chives buried in a large clump of grass. Which is grass and which are chives, a lot of sorting out, washing and then snipping. I have discovered I hate grating potatoes, no idea why. I am not sure the end result was worth all of my efforts, it tastes OK but I am not sure I like the texture of the potato shell. I miss the crispy pastry case. It filled a hole at dinner time with salad.
I sat at my PC for a long time ordering very special chocolates for my daughter's birthday present, cherry brandy liquors, I also ordered the myrtle to plant on my sister's grave. It is going to be bittersweet as my niece unwittingly has arranged for the ceremony to be held on my daughter's birthday, which is the day before my sister's birthday.

Lizzie, there was no discussion with the GP about the tablets he prescribed. He just told me he wanted to stop the Asprin and replace it with another blood thinner to correct the AF I have developed. I get the distinct impression they can do nothing to cure my problem so just give me something to keep me quiet and get me out of the consulting room. Go away and die quietly. Stop wasting our time and money. Several of my friends feel they are treated the same way. They are so short of time and money, they want to use them for younger patients who have a chance of recovery. Bitter, twisted attitude I know, but that is how some of us feel. The trouble is some of us have systems strong enough to keep going, on and on, and on ad infiniteum. We must be very irritating to the medical staff, like an itch that will not go away!

@Goldenlily26 , I must concur with your opinion re doctors nowadays. I was at the doctors last month when I suddenly went deaf in one ear. I ended up with a nasal spray,:noidea:! Wrong medication and a very inept doctor and he spoke quietly! He could have at least spoken up abit considering the reason I was there:scratch:

Morning. What a disturbed night. Thunder started about 2, so we got the dogs upstairs with us. Big mistake! They're not used to it, so it was all a game to them. I took them back down at about 3 when the thunder stopped - but not the rain. At 6, we were still awake. More thunder at 7, then I slept till 10.
Might have a snooze this afternoon.

                        Good morning all.

We did have storms in the night but I don't think they were very near, there was quite a gap between the lightning and the thunder. They did wake me up, though. It rained but not a lot. I would have liked more for the garden.

Ant swarms?? interesting. Up here, my house, we just get some black ant hill, not too big, about 2 feet across, we use a powder to get rid of them, as they are the kind that can damage wood. Going south there is what is called the Bug Line, below the bug line small flying things fly about. People talk about wearing softener sheets in their hats to keep them off their face. Although in the really southern parts such as Key West they are not there. Seems only in SC, Tennessee, Mississippi. We picked our southern home above the bug line.

I've checked the waterbuts, only one refilled, the second is still empty so we didn't get much rain after all.
@Songbird as there are connections between the nose, the ear and the back of the throat maybe he thought, relieving nasal congestion would help. On the other hand maybe just inexperienced and inept!

I'm sitting here, feeling quite frustrated as after a sunny few hours this morning, it is now raining on and off. Everytime I think it's stopped and I can get on my gardening jobs, I look out the window and find it hasn't. I might have to do the ironing after all! That is if OH wakes up, he's snoozing on the sofa opposite so I'm marooned on my recliner for a bit (it creaks when I hit the down button).

I hadn't thought of a fox @fairygirl. The hole was about 1 foot across and slightly deeper. It did occur to me this morning that there might have been an ant nest there as we're inundated with ants all over the garden at the moment. I filled in the hole yesterday.

I'm sorry about your experience at your GP's @Goldenlily26, sounds awful. Thankfully ours is the opposite, very caring and good at explaining medication and treatments. They have a reputation for being a 'holistic' practice of many years standing in this area.
What does your medication's leaflet say about dosage?

Sorry you had a bad night @Penny_Forthem. We expected some thunder but I didn't hear any although it was very hot and humid.

Cute Ant story. So true BTW. We had just renovated our kitchen, and for some reason, never before these tiny ants were walking on the countertop, maybe we disturbed something or made way for an opening. Anyway, so husband sprays around under etc. The next day in the kitchen i notice ants again on the countertop. I yell to husband, ants still here. He yells back to me "Are they new ants or old ants" wondering how to answer his question I say out loud to the ants, "anyone here new today raise your leg". no one raise their leg. Husband yelled back smart stern. LOL
