Words that get on your nerves

My dad became almost housebound as he got old and his neighbours were very kind and helped him in lots of practical ways. One way he repaid them was to invite any passing salesmen/women (JW included in that) to come in for a coffee and a nice long chat. By the time they escaped from my dad’s clutches they had no time left to mither the neighbours.

 

My grandmother got converted by visiting Jehovah's Witnesses, and my cousins and their children are still in the cult to this day. Gran took the bible absolutely literally and we were not allowed to mention things like evolution in front of her.

 

Fair play though, the JWs know some cracking Knock Knock jokes

 

Phrases that get on my nerves....

"Let me be clear" ..... and then proceeds to spout nonsense, and be anything but clear [cough] Keir Starmer

 

A big beautiful bill.

 

The JWs swerve my house. When any came, I used to present them with a reading list (how the brain works, groupthink, the psychology of cults, etc) in return for their mag!

A real irritant is the media referring to someone as a "star" when they appeared as a bit part in one film 50 yrs ago or were very briefly a contestant on a TV quiz or talent show.

 

I'm proud to say that I rarely recognise any of the celebrities on quiz shows.

 

My brother uses the term no-mark for such "celebrity" people. You could throw the word "influencer" into the same description.

 

Now you mention it he does say that a lot, just misses the, M'lud bit off the end.
He always sounds like he's summing up before the jury go away to decide the verdict.

Wonder what he looks like in a wig.

 

The definition of Celebrity does also include A Person of Notoriety - wonder how many of these so called celebrities realise that this is not always a good thing
"Affordable" - popular with the govt. to describe their house building plans. Everything is affordable for someone otherwise it would remain unsold. Looking at some of the prices for new builds round here, I'd not use the term affordable for the average buyer. Mind you, the agents do say " flooring included " so that's a plus

 

Might even throw in handles on the doors.
