Thought I'd start a thread so people can post photos of their beautiful dahlias now they've started flowering. I love seeing other people's dahlias and getting ideas for next years purchases.
About half of mine have started flowering so here's what I've got at the moment. I've gone for a certain colour palette so I can pick them for the house and they sort of match and not clash. I also find the ball dahlias last for ages as a cut flower.

I can see why people become addicted to dahlias, I'm heading that way :) they're just such so symmetrically perfect!

Dahlia coccinea definitely nowhere near symmetrical. Not a single rotational axis or a plane of reflection in sight.

Good idea for a thread @CatDouch I've made it sticky

I love them too, must get some photos for here. I grow most on my allotment for cutting. This is the bunch I brought home, sorry forgot the names

Thanks for making it a sticky thread @JWK

I grow mine in a raised bed for cutting as well and it keeps my vases full until about October. I still find it hard to cut them though as they look so beautiful outside, even though I know that cutting them encourages more flowers!! Yours look beautiful.

I am so jealous of these beautiful dahlias… I love them but can I grow them in this garden? Nope, not a chance. I don’t know what I'm doing wrong as previously, in our last house, I grew them with little trouble, but in this house , despite many tries and tribulations I still cannot grow them successfully. I particularly like the pom pom ones and, for some reason, I really like open yellow ones(:noidea:)
Well done to everyone growing them successfully and I will continue to enjoy them via your photos.:)

They struggle here due to slugs and now earwigs @Songbird , and that's if I can get them through winter, which is also difficult. Too damp here, so it's hard to get them dried off well enough to start with, and they really have to be in the house to stay viable. I only have David Howard growing now, but it's not quite ready to flower yet. A small segment of Neon Splendour is hanging on, but I don't think it'll do much.
I can't grow them in the ground, only pots, due to the slugs and colder soil etc, so maybe that would be easier? The seed grown ones are quite easy - Bishop's Children etc.

                          I like that Gardenetta one @Plantminded :)

I’ve tried them in the ground and in pots @fairygirl it to no avail. I have used the same compost brand I always use( when in pots) and have tried putting the pots around the garden in different spots. Put a couple in the ground and they rotted off.
I have one left, in a pot, and I noticed this morning that all the leaves and stems are blackening off from the bottom upwards and dying.

I have the same problem @Songbird. Have grown them previously quite succcessfully, even in a north facing garden. Here, east facing and very open and sunny, I have far less success. First challenge these days is simply getting them to survive through the winter.

I haven’t tried any from seed, am not a fan of the Bishops. I like them but not for my garden
