Mine looks pretty lethal, and could certainly do some damage if used in anger, due to the sharp point. But the edge is not sharp really (especially if you use it to scrape mud off tools :thud: ), I can't imagine cutting myself on it. The versions with one serrated edge could possibly be a bit more dangerous, but I've got the standard Niwaki.
I only used it for a bit of weeding today, as we were mainly cutting back grasses (with sickles).

Just seen a picture of a gardener weeding with what looks like a Hori Hori on page 39 of August Gardeners Word. One slip due to leverage and it is goodbye fingers.

Another vote for a tripod ladder here.
My dad's old potato fork, & his pull push hoe. The hoe was a prize at one of his work horticultural shows.

I would think an enthusiastic teenager either child or grandchild would be a really useful multipurpose gadget.

Honestly LG the gardener (female I think) is using the Hori Hori to weed the cracks in the paving stones using the point and levering out the weeds while helping to pull them out with the other hand and not wearing gloves. Three fingers are next to the blade tip as they help to pull the weeds out. Of course it might just be a pose for the photographer I hope.

They are very rare unfortunately. When I did the school garden I had one called Charlie and he was a godsend but on the whole gardening is not considered cool by teenagers. Charlie by the way went on to Duchy agricultural college and acheived a distinction. He wanted to be a farrier but I don't know if he got a job doing that. I am working on my grandchildren though!
