I noticed yesterday my Callicarpa is thick with flower buds. A promise of lots of berries for the birds later. The new Myrtle is also full of flower buds. My beautiful Gertude Jekyll is having a second flush of flowers and smelling wonderful.

Most of these probably belong in @Papi Jo's 'Close-up' thread, but they're also 'Looking Good' at the moment so I've opted for here.

I use a lot of grasses in my garden because the soil suits them, and I like them :). Here's a few after a rainy morning today.

Calamagrostis Karl Foerster, a good one for sun or shade, columnar, good winter interest. Also makes a a good informal hedge, self limiting at 1.5m.

          DSC04322.jpeg

Dwarf Pampas, Cortaderia Pumila, evergreen, nice dome shape, flowers start about now and look good until July the following year.

          DSC04323.jpeg

Miscanthus Malepartus, flowers start off a rich burgundy red, fading to an attractive tawny brown. The wide leaves have silver ribs.

          DSC04326.jpeg

Imperata rubra, Red Baron grass, lights up in sunshine.

          DSC04327.jpeg

Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Aureocaulis", a very upright bamboo, with golden canes which develop a tint of magenta in the right lighting, plus the occasional crooked cane.

We planted a Phyllostachys nigra near our greenhouse after the people behind us extended their house by 50% towards our boundary and we ended up with a huge wall to look at (but no windows thankfully). It grew quickly and did a good job of partly obscuring it. But (as I've probably mentioned previously) the House Sparrows developed a taste for the young leaves or their buds such that we've ended up with a lot of tall leaf-less stems.

It's tried to run a couple of times but I've been able to dig the runners out easily and bring them on in pots.

Love your grasses @Plantminded, especially that Miscanthus malepartus.

Monarda. I planted two last year, only one reappeared this year.

Thank you @LunarSea, it’s my favourite grass, doesn’t get damaged by wind or rain and has the best coloured flowers.

I’ve never seen any birds showing an interest in my bamboos, annoying for you. That nice backdrop to your garden compensates for that brick wall though :blue thumb:.

Little dianthus I got as a plug last year- Mendlesham Minx, thriving well.
                          113_0001 (4).JPG

I got 3 different types, but they were in those damn teabags and I couldn't get the others released well enough, so they didn't make it. Annoying, as they weren't cheap.
