My National Trust multitool doubles as one of those pocket puzzles. The small bits are easy to pull out but how do I open the plier/ wire cutter handles?

Should they be pulled outwards like butterfly wings, or be rotated down somehow?

I have tried everything possible but they don't budge.

Quick help would be appreciated, I might come across a wire to cut any moment and be unprepared :yikes:

    Thanks! :)

I don't have anything like that but my guess would be the side handles pivot forward or back, so they become the handles of the pliers.

The LHS rotates anti clockwise (to the left), the RHS rotates clockwise (to the right).
So they are below the plier head.

There should be a spring that makes the plier handles open further and allow you to use them. I have a similar tool that is smaller and instead of pliers, it has little scissors. It's a handy tool to keep clipped to my purse. :)

        Thank you all,
with a bit of confidence I managed to rotate the handle parts out. :)

Hopefully the toy will reduce the number of trips back to the house to wrestle the heavy toolbox from it's awkward place in the cupboard just for a wee tinkering of the bolts and screws in the GH.

Plus, I just happen to like small handy things

Just don't get caught in the street with it. The police will probably claim it's an offensive weapon!

Like mine, the blades are less than 2" and even allowed in your purse when getting on a plane :)

Has it got a thing for taking stones out of horses hooves.

Not always! I had a tiny swiss army knife (blade an inch at most!) confiscated at Singapore airport less than 10 years ago!

The bruised thumbnail taught me that I am similar to one of those old style Chatty Kathy dolls. Bash my thumb with a hammer and I shout! :heehee:

That Leatherman looks awesome, @CanadianLori :blue thumb:

I always, always wanted a proper Swiss army knife when I was a kid. I did get a cheapy copy at some point, but for my (about) 10th birthday I got a real Puukko. About like this, with a leather sheath. :)

                        upload_2025-8-17_19-39-14.png

It was my best friend and gave me boats, outdoor loo handle, suitable plugs for every occasion, kindling to fires and so much more. It failed on willow whistle though. :noidea:

It was carelessly thrown away with flower wrapping paper after being used to trim rose stems at some party occasion. I cried for a week. :frown:

It has now been looming in my mind that I really need a small boat in my pond. There's suitable wood around, so if I manage to find a way to buy a sturdy puukko- like knife without being arrested about even thinking about it, I might just get one.

Anyways I still have ten fingers and am not planning a career as a concert violinist. What could possibly go wrong?
