Just saw that the tree fern gets now leave number 14 or so.
The last year planted Helenium gets new side shoots and so the Delphinium.

After investing £65 for new plants hoping it all works out and we get finally rain in Autumn, we invested today into a new planter for the tree fern. The one that I bought in Spring time turned out to be a problem in the future and so I decided to solve the issue now rather than waiting for its arrival.

The new planter is almost 50cm high and wider than the old one, but more important, the base is now a proper one with one hole for drainage.
I got a good impression of how dry the soil is if it doesn't rain. The garden centre recommended to drill more holes but I think, if it rains too much in winter, I can cover it, but I can't do anything if the water rinse through in dry summers.

Two new leaves gets the tree fern (no 13 and 14).

One of the new Heleniums that I bought yesterday.

This is the left side of the border in front of the bench. Originally, I intended to add new plants in June, but with no rain on the horizon, I decided to wait until Autumn. All the gaps in between will be filled if my seeds and seedlings in the greenhouse work out as I hope.

Seeing what joy the Perovskia Blue Spire gives the bees, I bought a second one.

      20250824ourgarden_05.jpg

I also bought a grass Pennisetum 'Hameln' on the left and a smaller version of a Perovskia called Blue Steel which will have only a height of 35cm, which is intended. It's in the path of blowing winds when they blow on the way back from neighbour's fence. 20250824ourgarden_06.jpg

The Salvia 'Caradonna' survived and so I bought another one. It's part of the drought resistant planting.

Finally, I bought this yellow Crocosmia not checking the internet first. I thought only the Lucifer was a thug which I had taken out last year. When I found here the entry about Crocosmia ID and checked with the RHS website, my Crocosmia went from the bed straight into a pot.

No, it was on sale down to £34.99 from £49.99. :) We bought it at Bampton Garden Centre. In fact, they had spring bulbs stored in 4 such pots and were so kind and took the bulbs out in one of them.

Your tree fern looks great in its new home @simone_in_wiltshire. It has responded well to all your care :blue thumb:.

Thanks Plantminded. The root stem has grown around 7 or 8 cm is now as high as it grew since 2021. The leaves are around 1 meter long now.
The other pot wouldn’t have worked in the next years and so I fixed it while the root is still limited. Now it can grow until the barrel pot is too small :)

xChitalpa first flowers since planted 10 years ago, weird thing really and a lot less floriferous than believed when I bought it really needs full sun against a wall to flower well.

@Plantminded, beautiful. :blue thumb: In the 3rd photo, what is the tall plant with lime green foliage behind the yellow flowers slightly right of centre?

@NigelJ, I have never heard of most of your plants. It is a real education seeing them. :blue thumb: Love the colour of Grandpa Ott.

Thank you @ViewAhead. It’s a Catalpa bignonioides aurea or Indian Bean Tree (it’s not Indian and it doesn’t produce beans ). I started pollarding it last year to keep it a reasonable size and encourage larger leaves. It catches the light well in that location.

Its a North American tree that will produce beans if you let it flower, not edible, so I always call it an Injun bean tree.

That explains it :). How old is your tree @pete? Mine never flowered in its first ten years and is probably unlikely to if I keep pollarding it.

Let’s see how it develops :) My one cost just £5.

I had to water my newly planted plants. Remember, they are grown in peat-free compost and that dries out on day 2.
