I was in a garden centre today looking for some Geraniums. as i was looking at the shelves of Geraniums i noticed some boxes had six plants cost £5 a box and some boxes had 12 plants cost £3 a box , all mixed up on the same shelves :DOH:.. I called the Attendant over and asked the question" why are some boxes priced at £5 for 6 plants and other boxes marked £3 for 12 plants".he looked at the boxes, messed about for a couple of minutes and said," the only thing i can think of is ,the boxes with 12 for £3 are older stock".I laughed and said "well i suppose i will be forced to buy the 12 for £3"and will take 4 boxes ":WINK1::WINK1:.. i do know that garden centres have a separate place for old stock which are past their sell by dates and they do sell them off cheaper, but these plants were all in mint condition.so 48 upright Geraniums for £12 are much better than 48 upright Geraniums for £40. THAT WILL DO FOR ME.:yess:.
Be honest Music. You were in B & Q weren`t you? They always do a two tier thing. Last year it was 6 for a fiver or 15 smaller plants for a fiver.
I think they are slightly smaller, BUT, having said that, I have still bought 6 or 7 trays of them, and the clients are happy with them.:D
I was also at Klondyke today, they are charging @ £3.50 for 6 Petunias . I have been growing Petunias for @6 yrs and Never,Never paid a price like that . Have they All Jumped on the Band Wagon .
I bought a nice big geranium today (can't remember the name, though..) for £2.48! But my sister hates waiting for anything to grow, so it had to be grown already to a decent size!
I feel for the nursery owners because these " sheds " tell them what they are going to pay, so the nursery has no choice but to produce so many just to cover their costs. Of course they could say no, but, unfortunately, there are so few independents that they would never survive.
Whenever I buy 10+ plants, I like to get them from nurseries, because normally with the big retail garden centres you get a few which are dead in every cell thingie.
