I have grown Erythrina crista galli in the past and it flowered for me from its second year from seed (3 flower spikes in its 2nd year); amazing flower. I grew it in a pot and kept it fairly rootbound, the plant grew to about 4 or 5ft each year after being pruned back to about 12-18" in the spring as new growth started. I kept it inside in a cool conservatory until May and then it went out in a sun-trap and sheltered from strong winds...

I sowed some seed for it last year (around June; a bit late) and got a decent plant by the autumn; approx 30" in height, but unfortunately it hasn't made it through the winter even though its been kept in a frost free place. Need to get some more seed I think and start it off earlier this time..:D

They can have a certain OMG factor. Some are hardier than others.

If it has survived I have just the spot for it at the new place! Thanks for the info Bilbo.

I agree! I have never seen it before either. What a pity it seems to only have a solitary leaf to a corm...does yours only produce one leaf Madahhlia?

          I bought a P.alata this afternoon for £5.99!
It's one of those "boxed" up things that you see in larger garden centres from PatioPlants, a Dutch wholesaler. I've had varying degrees of success with their plants in the past, but this looks good and was clearly fresh in.
Got a Brugmansia sanguinea too for £4.99.

I have just looked through the previous page and noted Keith's Besserra and Scadoxus. I think this new software has a hynotic effect as I went out and bought these two a couple of days ago. I remembered Keith's Scadoxus as I had seen pictures of it before. But as I bought the Besserra, I would have sworn that I had never heard of it before.

Thanks Keith - most interesting site. There are loads of things there that I have never seen. I would never, in a month of Sundays, have marked your picture down as an Allium. I certainly don't know my onions.

I have just Googled that - 2 hits only - both the same chap. That's something of a record. I don't think I am going to find them in my local B&Q garden department.:) Correction - when I put in the correct spelling there are more. But still a mini WOW - I suspect that plants have got to be fairly big to get a mega WOW.
