    hi everyone,

I usually fill a pot/tray with compost stand it in water then sow the seed then cover in a plastic bag.

On GW they seem to sow the seed then water and not cover.

I was just wondering if there is a right or wrong way and how other people do it?!

Stingo, every gardener has their own way of propogating and with most it's trial and error to find the best way.

I fill the trays/pots with compost and then soak from a watering can with a rose attached. Sow the seeds and place either in my electric propogator or put them on a window sill. I have never felt the need to use plastic bags. :)

I use different methods depending on the size of the seed and whether they need to be covered. Tiny seeds like lobelia and begonia I do the same as you Stingo, soak the pot first then sow. I'll cover with a poly bag or a glass sheet if the seeds are surface sown as I think that stops them drying out.

The problem with watering from above is that you can wash the tiny seeds down into the compost or with say tomatoes they can float to the top. Bigger seeds like peas and beans I'm a bit more heavy handed with, and use a fine watering can rose to soak them after sowing.

The 'free' RHS seeds come with a sowing guide, and I've been following that, so some need to be kept moist and in the dark, others need light to germinate, not to mention all the different stratification and temp ranges too.

        Different methods here too.

Beans & Peas I soak overnight first, things that take a long time I put in a plastic bag to stop the compost drying out.

Generally I wet the compost before sowing & then put drier compost on top to cover, unless its something that needs light to germinate.

Did some French Marigolds a few days ago, just put them on top of damp compost, most of them are coming up now.

I have always watered seed trays/pots first and sown after, covering (where required) with fine or medium Vermiculite.

I sow the seeds first then carefully water from the bottom , just stopping the watering at the first sign of water on the seed layer. Then a spray with copper fungicide , if seeds are surface sown I cover with vermiculite . I always sow in props with lids .

I fill tray/pot and water with a fine rose, then I sow seed onto and cover with a thin layer of compost. I then dampen the top layer with a fine mist of water from a spray bottle and put a propagator lid on.

Always do that with do with basil, and if you grow loads of the stuff then every
opportunity to get it a bit cheaper helps

As Ziggy says you need to be an RHS member. If so you are entitled to 20 packets of seed collected from their gardens, it is a very comprehensive list. You have to pay £12 in admin charges.

It’s too late for this year, the deadline has passed. It will begin again in November, get your order in early as it’s first come first served:
