I didn't want to hijack Capneys 'i'm back' thread ....again it's great to see him back:dbgrtmb: but with reference to Shineys post regarding the wonderfull sound of the old mower.....IMO you just can't beat it...:dbgrtmb:....
I sometimes use our old push mower....yes it's heavy and takes longer but my lawn looks all the better for it ...i can see a big difference in the finish from a petrol or electrickery mower....
My question is ....why when some folk us the 'modern' lawn mowers do they take an age to cut the grass....i thought they were supposed to be quicker....'someone' not far from where i'm sitting takes 1 hour and 15 mins to cut a lawn approx 80ft X 20ft....yes i've timed him....whoa and as for his strimmer....it sounds more like he's racing a moped around the garden:gaah: .....Why????

When my parents bought an electric lawnmower because neither of them could manage the old (Qualcast?) push/pull one any more I'd always still use their manual mower when I'd cut their small'ish lawn because it was such a PITA to set up with extension leads, RCD devices, drag cables around, and then put it all away again.

I reckon there's probably some people who don't even realise you can still buy new manual mowers.

My pet hate are strimmers :gaah:Weeks and weeks of bad weather - nice day pops up -sit in the garden with a nice drink - all you can here are strimmers from dawn til dusk ! Power tools should be banned after 1pm weekends and holidays!

My mam lives close to the town centre. I live in the more suburban edge of town. One time while she was visiting, we were out in the garden chatting about general noise. She was saying how her neighbour had had a noisy party and how it must be so much quieter for me, being at the edge of town. I replied, 'you're joking aren't you, just listen'. She did, then she realised that all along there'd been a cacophony of sound from lawn mowing, strimmers, people hammering to mend fences/shed etc etc. Until I prompted her to listen, she'd obviously been able to hear it but had blocked it out. I then told her how that's normal, and then at night we still have neighbours just like everyone else, so you still get the ocassional party noise, or drunken fools passing on their way home from the clubs, same as in town.

Me too - not because of the noise, but because they make habitat destruction all too easy in what what would otherwise have been undisturbed corners of gardens.

I'd never be able to get my lawns mowed with an old style mower it would cripple me now, so I need and use a motor mower. I try to do all the 'noisy' work during the week so it doesn't upset peoples weekends, but my neighbours don't think like that. There is no respect for anything or anyone now. :gaah:

An hour and fifteen minutes!! That's almost an hour too long! :rolleyespink: Unless that includes getting it out from a difficult place in the shed, cleaning it afterwards, and putting back in an awkward place in the shed. :heehee:

It doesn't even take me that long when I'm having to shoo the bees off the clover flowers on the lawn.

Do you think he's trying to get you to take over the mowing? :heehee:

It has just taken me 45 minutes to get the mower from the shed, fill it with petrol, put the can away, mow this lawn (including the difficult bit of maneuvering around the curved beds and mowing under the juniper and conifers), trim the edges, put the mower away and put the clippings on the compost heap.

The mowing went round the back of the conifers as well :dbgrtmb:

I think he maybe likes the sound of the mower Shiney....he certainly likes the sound of his own voice.....i can even hear him when he's in his kitchen on the phone and he's 2 houses away....but his garden runs up the back of mine....
Just look at the size of your garden Shiney ...it's huge and as you say you do it in half the time so he obviously has a sound fetish....

Probably not, but is he cutting it both-ways to get nice criss-cross stripes?

Or very narrow and/or slow mower?

Or a flymo, used like a Hoover with back-forth motion?

                Or just completely useless?!!

That's quite impressive, using a mower ... no wonder it takes him so long :heehee:
