The back door of my house is a good old fashioned wooden one. I've found out from a neighbour that its been there for a lot of years.

It keeps growing and I have to keep shaving bits off. Every time we get a bit of damp weather, I have to practically break my way out of it and then once open, I have to cut slithers off so I can close it again but when the weather dries out again, the door doesn't shrink, it just keeps growing.

It would be great if I had a solid fuel fire, but I don't, so is there any practical way to stop it growing all the time?

Put a bullet in it. That usually stops other life forms from growing. :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Is it the door growing or the frame/ door step moving in the damp

The latter seems the most likely explanation. Be careful it doesn't end up like this

Definitely the door swelling, or possibly the door frame too, but the brickwork isn't wandering as far as I can tell.

You need to stop it getting wet.
        Is it a softwood door?
        Maybe the joints are moving?
er, maybe you need a new one?;)

I think its hardwood of some sort. It's certainly hard when I'm trying to chip bits off it.

You're right though pete, I think it probably is time for a new one, and I do need to stop it getting wet. If it rains when the wind the blowing a certain way, the rain creeps under the door.

Funnily enough, I have plastic doors at the front, two of them. I guess they are good from a security point of view, or energy efficiency, but I dislike them enough that they're on the list of things to do (replace with wooden ones). I've got a gazillion other more urgent things to do do first, some of which might be costly. The back door might get promoted on the list though, because it is quite warped and it is starting to come away a bit on some of the joints.

Have you got a weatherboard and/or a water bar?
