What plants have you brought or ordered?

Hi I have been into tropicals for just two years. Slowly I have managed to buy more and more plants as i have learned about them and their needs. Well this winter I have gone mad buying.My conservatory is like a greenhouse, it is that full! Some of them are plants that are being over wintered from last summer. This winter I have brought 3 cycads, 5 Dickinson Antartica ,2 enstete maurelli, 2 ventriculosum?, plus lots of small plants. Outside against the house I have another lot of small palms, cordylines and yuccas waiting to be planted out. On top of that I am awaiting 2 lg Trachy's and a Yucca Rostrata which should hopefully arrive around Easter time. So what have you brought so far?

 

Only just into growing tropical really this year. Grew a few cannas last year but that was my limit.
This year I've ordered a 4 foot trachycarpus palm, colocasia sangria, colocasia black magic and a musa sikkimensis red tiger.
Hopefully my cannas will come through!
Want to order a few more if funds allow.
Might try and get hold of some eddos , taros tubers and bananas again if morrisons do them again

 

Hi I grew some edoes last year but they did not do very well. Of the three I have overwintered, I think two have diedThe third seems ok atm. May gets some more to try but tbh, I don't think I have much luck with them.

 

You want to get the plain green Banana Musa. They are quite cheap, quick growing, and you can get lots of pups from them without even trying for the following year. I had just one last year and now have about 8 small ones growing on in the conservatory.

 

The speed of Ensete maurelii (or montbeliardii - but its upright growth makes it harder to have roof-height to accommodate before planting out) takes some beating IME.

 

Agree totally. My Maurelli's did really well last year, alot better than I expected and they were only 2nd season plants.Will be interesting to see how big they get this year.This year I have another 2 + 2 ventricosum to plant out as well. But I do like the plain musa just because they pup so easily and look good as a clump.

 

I bought a 1L plant of E. maurelii in Autumn 2011.

Wow yours did grow big. I think they beat mine! The leaves are fantastic aren't they? Mine were so big they cast a fair bit of shade so the plants underneath did not do so well. Your coleus I notice did very well as well. I started mine quite late so they did not get very big but have got some in the prop now so hopefully will do better this year.

 

I've just ordered Eucharis amazonica bulbs.

I grow a few tropicals/sub tropicals, especially bulbs now for ease of storage.

My best tropical is Clerodendrum ugandense.................


Stands about two metres tall now.

I also have a seed pod of Allamanda "Cherries Jubilee" ripening for me in San Diego!

 

Oh I love the colour and the unusual petal shape. I assume that is definitely one for the green house then

 

Bloomed outdoors last summer and indoors for most of January.

This year I'm not going for anything in particular, I want a few more ensette though. I'm growing a lot from tubers or bulbs esp dahlias for colour. I do want a few more miscanthus too and the colocasia looks a good one for leaf form. Cannas are on the list too.

I have some ricinus seeds to plant, and have some rudbeckia too. All in all, I'm hoping that the garden will be double that of what it was last summer, and for the bargains I've picked up since Christmas re hardy perennials I think the borders are going to be packed. Can't bladdy wait!!!
