can not believe this!! - Horsetail, help!!

I go with the never let it see a Sunday and crushing the stems and applying Glyphosate. You don't need to but full bio gear on and nuke your garden for 12 months I would think the majority on here have a touch of horsetail in their gardens. Its not to difficult to control , very difficult to eradicate.

 

I have had success by spraying the area with diesel or if you intend to plant then use a half inch paint brush and brush the diesel on as the tips come through. It pretty soon kills them

 

... and plus it only kills the "tops" of the weeds, so any perennial weeds will be back again soon / next year re-growing from the roots.

 

Hi I have used Kurtail, still here and breathing. I have a lot of marestail around me and a fair bit in the garden due to rotavating in the spring before I new it was there and spreading all around. The instructions need to be followed carefully, What I have been doing to avoid spray drift is using a plastic lemonade bottle with the bottom cut out and taping it to the spray nozzzle then just push it over the plant you wish to spray that way you can give it a good dose without fear spray drift on the plants near by or yourself, it works for me!!

 

I'll be interested to know whether it prevents them coming back in Year 2 please.

Sadly the more likely damage these things can do, short of actually drinking it, is much more long term

 

Sorry for delay, hard to tell at the moment as I am not sure if it'sold stuff coming back or original invading as I would have to spray a huge area, which is financialy a no no so just have to do a containment spray as required

 

My new garden has a fair bit but don't fancy the Kurtail route. Has anyone had success with crushing and glyphosating please? The horsetail here is when and truly a part of the flower beds, gonna a long slog I reckon.

 

Pleased to hear it, very noxious stuff for an amateur to use (but you could employ a professional to administer it?)

My fallback would be Ammonium sulphamate (sold by a company with a name like "Dax" as a compost accelerator)

Good to hear these tips - I notice mare's tail growing in a garden about 6 doors down, probably not controlled as it's creeping out along the edge of the pavement. I'm wondering how soon it'll get to mine.

 

This is the Marestail I had at the time of building the Japanese Garden. Repeated spraying with a product I obtained from the local Farmers suppliers helped a lot. This area was covered in sheets of newspaper and then covered in topsoil. It made a massive difference quickly. I now spray twice a year where possible with a product that kills the marestail but not grass. It can't be used near the pond however.
