Need help in understanding why my house has been overrun with aphids/greenflies

OK - I have just tried it with protections disabled, and the link posted is not spam in itself - - however, a pop-up advert does appear a few seconds later (in my case it was for wind power), and when clicked to close it then takes you to a website which is less than desirable (webcam 'models', and I use the term loosely)

@Adamoxo - I would strongly advise you to consider another way of hosting your photos (photobucket is a well known one), as the site you are currently using does not appear to be all that secure/clean.

As mentioned above, you can upload images directly from your PC to Gardeners Corner (simply click on the Upload a File button under the post window, and then browse for the desired image), which means that you don't have to bother with an external host site.

If you need any assistance in uploading files in this manner, do post back here and preferably tag any of the staff team and we will be happy to help - - for ease, I have tagged them on this post so you know who we all are:

Given the issue with your current host site, can you please refrain from posting links to that particular site on GC.

As you know, we don't 'do' casting aspersions here on GC, nor do we discuss matters about any members in the open forum. I am content that there is currently nothing more than an issue with a chosen photographic host site, however all the staff team are on hand and happy to review and revise should there be any more issues.

@Adamoxo - I have a feeling that your aphids are not aphids, I reckon they are either drain flies or fruit flies.

We had a plague of these at work a couple of years ago, and it went on for almost a month - it transpired that the family that run the canteen contract had gone on holiday, leaving inexperienced staff in charge, and whilst they had topped up the tea and coffee vending machines, they hadn't emptied or cleared out a bucket that lived in the bottom of the machine, which collected the drips and spills from the drip tray. When we eventually worked it out and cracked the machine open, there was swarms of the things all over the place.

Worth checking to see if you have gotten a piece of fruit or something that has rolled into a hidden space and is quietly fermenting away; another place to look is the back of your fridge - modern fridges have a cavity drain that runs from the inside out to a small tray that sits on top of the compressor; the idea is that any frost or condensation that forms on the inside of the fridge will run down through the drain hole into the tray and then the heat from the compressor will evaporate it. This works well, until something else goes through the hole with the water - bits of fruit or veg, or even drinks that have leaked without your knowledge.
