I was out for a run yesterday on my cycle. As I was cycling around the Park,(designated area for cycling), I noticed an elderly lady with a dog extension leash tangled around her ankle, she was shaking trying to untangle the leash and chase the dog away, she was in a state.
I jumped off the cycle, untangled the leash and chased the dog away.
The responsible person who was in charge of the dog, and I say that sarcastically, was
standing chatting to one of his mates with his back to the incident, oblivious to what was going on with the extension fully extended.
After I put the elderly Lady on her way, fortunately uninjured, I walked over to the owner of the dog.
I gave him some colourful language about the incident and his failure of being aware to the situation and what could have occurred..
He was eventually very apologetic about his actions,or the lack of actions.

I think in a Public Park a short leash should be used to stop incidents like this incident and could have ended leaving an elderly lady having an injury falling over.

As far as I know some of these extension leashes go to 5 metres.:yikes:.

Very inconsiderate owner, my neighbour tends to be un aware of her dog whilst we walk, I frequently have to tell her that her dog is "emptying" when she is dragging him along regardless, I am currently walking a neighbours dog also, she is too weak to control her aggressive with other dogs, staffie bitch, she is having radiation, she commented the other day how long I let Ruby have, it`s because I am used to a long lead, greyhounds have 6ft leads, that`s so you don`t tread on their feet, a definite no no with a racing dog, but i am aware of what my dog is doing, try walking 6 at a time and not be aware of any conflicts.

What is there to say, some humans should not own a dog. maybe a fish.
Whenever I was out and about with my GSD, on a 6 foot lead, the lead was well in hand in the proper companion fashion. If we stopped to talk to someone, he knew to sit at my left heel and be patient, he may get a little weary and finally lay down, but again that was at my left heel, a foot from me. And that is a well trained dog.

They are all about that length, when I had Maddie I purchased one of them, my thought was she could have some freedom walking while I got her used to me and her surroundings, Having seen people walking with them I decided to get a fluorescent yellow tape type, no misunderstandings, my dog is clearly on a lead. If anyones dog approaches aggressively I can indicate/shout to the other owner, Get YOUR dog under control, My dog walking friends tell me it can be spotted from 100s of yards away.
Truth be told, she is seldom on the lead nowadays, she has no aggression, but, if pushed will stand her ground, but is quite obedient, to recall, I didn`t expect her to be so easy to train as 2 years old when I got her, lived in kennels all her life, and I called her "Maddie" no idea of what if any her previous "kennel" name would have been.

But please don't tar all dog owners with the same brush. In my experience dog owners are more than responsible people who love their pets and are always aware of what they are doing.
@music told a very harrowing tale and was right in his response but I would suggest that he could possibly go a lifetime without seeing a similar occurrence.

That's why i said some, i also love dogs and have had many in my time, but there are some owners that do care what they're dogs are doing, three times i've been bitten on my legs by dogs and there owners were just looking on with no care in the world that there dog have bitten any one, the next time a dog bites me i will now make a phone call
Most are responsible but there are some that aren't is what i'm saying

We/other local dog walkers quickly advise one another of problem dogs/problem dog owners.

The problem here is with the dog owner and his inattention, not with the long lead. He did apparently appoogise. I am in favour of long leads. They allow the dog some freedom and are certainly preferable to no lead which is something I see far too much of.

I probably didn`t make myself clear, it is the owner holding the end of the lead that needs training.

Molly has an 8 metre stretchy lead . They are fantastic for walking dogs giving them lots of freedom . You can stop the lead instantly with the button and lock it down to any length for walking along roads . I do agree you must keep an eye on them at all times and put them on a short lead when there are people about .

I don't like the extending leads, purely for the fact they are not foolproof and a yank on the lead from the dog, a trip of the finger or thumb, next to a busy road and the dog would be able to bolt. Unfortunately, my dog is stupid where traffic is concerned.

We use the ones with a tape lead that's regularly checked for wear and tear, plus which could be far more easily grabbed in event of brake button failure - had that happen once with a corded retractable lead and got my hand badly burnt.
