The title of the song on the previous thread by Grace of 'You Don't Own Me' prompted the reminder of the Ray Charles song 'You Don't Know Me'

He had a big hit with it in 1962 (lots of other stars recorded it and made hits of it) and was written by the fabulous Cindy Walker in 1955. She wrote many hits in the 'Country' genre but some moved outside of that. Some of her songs were hits for Jim Reeves, such as 'Anna Marie' and 'Distant Drums' and she wrote Roy Orbison's big hit 'Dream Baby'.

If any of you haven't seen the biopic "Ray" I thoroughly recommend it.

I spent a couple of hours one night of the holidays watching the BBC4 programs devoted the the Big O.

The slight tremor in his voice that gave it an emotional depth was in fact down to chronic stage fright. This extended to all forms of performance which meant that he preferred to be in the studio in the morning when he could control it better.

A later track which was written for the man by U2....................

His later career revival almost didn't happen. David Lynch wanted to feature the song in his film Blue Velvet but was refused permission. Being Lynch he said bugger that and used it in the film anyway and Orbison was sent a copy of the edit which after a few watches he relented. The song was such an important part of the film that it bought Orbison to the attention of a younger audience and the rest is history...............

Most, or all of you, will know or have heard this song about the sad death of Buddy Holly but someone has done a fantastic job of adding pictures to try and explain all of the wording in it.

I recommend watching it as there are so many songs and incidents referred to. Most of them are what I would think are accurate but some may be stretching the point a bit.

              It's a brilliant song anyway.

Don McLean wrote many famous songs and inspired many good singers and song writers. He wrote many hit songs such as American Pie and Vincent and

                  And I Love You So

Roberta Flack was inspired by Don and wrote this song about him

And with this next song (written by Ewan MacColl) she broke all records by being the only solo artist to have won two consecutive Grammys for 'Record of the Year' (1974 & 1973).

@shiney - thank you for posting the Meaning of American Pie; I have always loved that song - one of those that reaches deep inside you and touches something, and that video only adds further to its appeal :)

Not bad for a five year old. Hold out for the little solo at the end. :)

Emmylou Harris with Neil Young on backing vocals.................

                            Townes Van Zandt..................

I've probably posted this before but I don't care as I've been listening to the maniacs today and this track is just plain brilliant!

And a bit of Patti Smith to finish...............
