Sweet Peas

Hi folks. Today I planted out my sweet peas. Thing is, I sowed these probably 2 months ago and they were fast outgrowing their pots and were becoming quite large plants. Am I right in saying that these are tender plants ? If so, why do they tell you to sow so early ? Cheers...freddy.

Thanks Dai. Any tips on growing them ? I saw some guy on tv produce some superb blooms, nice long stems. Obviously I'm not looking to produce show winners, but to lengthen those stems a bit would be great. In the past, I've just let them do their thing which has resulted in short stems. Any tips ? The showmen take out most of the stems to give just 2 or 3 showable stems. what you could do is remove about a third of stems. And hope for the best.:D

Do you mean the tendrils? The things that hold the plants up?:D Leave them alone.

 

Oh, I thought there were sideshoots ? OK, obviously not the case. As a side issue, really looking forward to this year, last year was about trying to remember things and get a feel for gardening in general. The garden is taking shape and plants are well advanced. I learned so much from the good folks on here (and yes, that includes you Dai :D) Just hope that pests and diseases don't take too much of a toll. Cheers...freddy.

I always worry about slugs eating sweet peas, but they seem to ignore them.
