Need advice on the best kind of hydrangeas please, for large tubs in a southwest facing position, exposed to some wind from the north. Must be easy for me to look after as I've never had them before. TY

Mop heads are always a safe bet, quite stress free but keep them watered

As Loofah has mentioned macrophylla family of hydrangea ( mopheads - lacecap ) require plenty of watering during the growing season .

It depends on how big the pot is ? but they is quite a lot of hydrangea available.

If the pot is on the smaller size maybe Hydrangea paniculata Little lime or bombshell will suit, the Paniculata group aren't as thirsty as macropylla so maybe more suitable and the frost doesn't damage the flowering stems. Just looking at your location I wouldn't go with Macrophylla if you are prone to very hard or late frosts , I didn't get any flowers on my mophead last year after the frost damaged it.

So I would look up if I was you Hydrangea Paniculata and Hydrangea Arborescens both of these groups flower new wood grown in the same year ( Macrophylla older wood hence the damage ) . They lots to look at Paniculata have a cone shaped flower and tend to change colour I have lime light ( little lime parent ) and I have Hydrangea Arborescens strong annabelle giant ball pure white flowers but they can also be pink.

Hydrangea Serrata Blue bird is quite a nice smallish hydrangea so that maybe is of some interest .

A good site to browse for them is Signature Hydrangeas I think I got one of mine off them , they is also a signature shrub site which sell a few interesting plants I got my parrotia persian spire off them.

Great help & info thank you Perki! I'm wary of anything at all delicate or fussy, although we've now moved down from 1000ft up in the hills, this is still Scotland and still prone to late cold Springs so I will be careful. I haven't got the tubs yet, am looking at some on amazon but they sell in sizes like 30 to 130L and I've no idea what that is but will ask in here before I buy the hydrangeas. You lot know everything
