I have four long and well established hedges. Two in the front garden and two at the back. The two at the back are showing little sign of new growth and are turning brown. The two at the back are fine. My first thought was that maybe the severe winter had effected them but that wouldn`t explain the difference between front and back. Can anyone offer an explanation ?

Hi Peter and welcome to GC. There is an aphid doing 'the rounds' at the moment that is causing severe problems for the leylandii at the moment. I found this website that mentions it.

    Aphid Killing Leylandii

    Hope that helps

I presume they were not cut back into old wood last time they were trimmed? Leylandii won't regenerate from old wood.

But the Leylandii Aphid is most likely the culprit if there are patches / significant areas of brown.

Could it be wind burn. Is the sick hedge in an exposed position?
