I planted two clematis (sieboldiana clematis florida bicolor, pruning group 3) which i purchased from floraselect last year. I planted in november .in a prepared area in the ground. the two clematis arrived in flower. my question is when do i see a bit of life from the plants as at the moment they look a bit withered:scratch:. i cannot see any signs of shoots coming through. i know we have had a severe winter i know everything is later coming through the solid frozen ground ,am i being a bit over anxious ? i have never planted Clematis before ,so i am in the unknown. music .

My Clematis all have tiny shoots showing, but very small, apart from one (Bill McKenzie) that has none at all yet - it's also a Group 3. Hopefully yours are just late. A lot of plants are this year, after the bad winter has hed up growth.

Ran across a wonderful Clematis supply place called Silver Star vinery. Even if it can't ship out to you folks its worth the look to find interesting ones and try to hunt them up local.

My clematis are hardly showing growth (well one is but that is very sheltered) If you havnt grown them before it can be hard to see where life is coming from, but son you should swellings between these the old leaf axles, they will open to leaves and in tine new shoots. Even if this doesnt happen dont give up, sometimes on younger plants all the top growth can die back but new shoots will come from the base (below soil level). This cn happen really late so llike I say dont give up, I even had a Clematis The President die back in august one year, nothing next spring..or summer...I was amazed in June of the following year (so nearly two years after last sign of life) VERY strong shoots emerge, ti rompted away and flowered well that autumn.
