Got my entry forms in today. 16 categories in all. Do people exibit on paper plates or is it just on the table, couldn't find the info on the website ? Only about the top tray & putting tomatoes on a bed of sand:what:

Oh, those onions that you told me to leave in the ground Dai, all rotted at the base:DOH: Good job i've got some on the shelves:heehee:

Ziggy I have no idea what the RULES are,
But at village garden fetes etc NOTHING looks as NAFF as the display on a paper plate

Personally I would use the family silver , though I expect you could use your Royal Doulton in PLAIN WHITE

No seriously, if there is an alternative please take it

Good luck on the 25th

ziggy, Mrs shiney won 9 prizes on Tuesday :hapfeet:. You must follow the instructions exactly. If they don't say how something should be exhibited then you need to use your initiative. When it's a group of small items, e.g. 3 onions or three courgettes, then it is normal to exhibit them on a plate, or similar. A paper plate is better than no plate and most people just use paper plates.

Normally the size of the veggie (I guess those are the categories you will be entering) is secondary to the appearance. When it's a group of veggies they should all be as similar in size as possible and unblemished - if possible. If they are a staight type veg then they need to be as straight as possible. Onions need to be 'dressed' - you take off the outer skin so that you leave the nice, shiny unblemished inner brown skin (or white or red), cut the stalks to about 2-3 inches, fold them over and bind them with raffia or twine (some people use a brown rubber band). If they are large onions it's best to stand them on rings which we cut from the inner part of a toilet roll. Have a look at what this man says:-

              Smithyveg!: How to 'dress' onions

Runner beans are usually too big for a plate so some people wrap a piece of card in cloth or silver foil and put their entry on that.

tomatoes must have their calyx on.

At most shows they will give you a small card for each entry where you will put the number of the Class you have entered (normally on both sides) and your name on one side. You place the card alongside your exhibit (or slightly under the edge of your display) with your name face down.

Again - always follow the instructions they set otherwise they will just ignore your entry.

This is Mrs shiney's winning marrow but it doesn't have to be so large. Last year she won it with a marrow half the size but it was even straighter and more colourful.

Well done Mrs Shiney, excelent news:yess::dbgrtmb:

That is really usefull info Shiney, ta very much:thumbsup:

I might be in with a chance, i've got 3 onions that look the same as the top pic on matey's blog. Not ripened enough yet, got them on the window sill in the caravan hoping the sun will come out. But i'm guessing everyone else is in the same boat this year. I planted the seeds on Boxing Day, we just haven't had the weather this year.

I'll get hold of some paper plates, kitchen towel & raffia, then I can make a raffiawork base, that has an attachement.
