I have just been given a Magnolia Susan as a gift but we have alkalkine soil (Chilterns Chalk). Is there any point in trying to grow it here - can I add compost to the planting site and if so how much would I need to put in to make my plant happy?
    Thanks for your help.

You can grow it in a tub using ericaceous compost

alternatively dig out a large hole fill it with ericaceous compost and give it an iron tonic now and again (follow the instructions on sequestered iron or ferous sulphate tonics from garden centres) you will know when it needs an iron boost as the leaves will start yellowing

    I have one myself [IMG]
