Hi Music, well, if they've grown up to 8'ft without any flowers it usually means they've had a fair amount of nitrogen which has made the green growth you see. It is too late to feed them now as you'll only make the plants too soft for the Winter. Next year after you've pruned them as you want, give them a general purpose feed. That will supply them with a balanced feed of Nitrogen, Phosphate, Potash, and trace elements. When the roses shows signs of budding feed them with a Tomato feed which has a high Potash ratio and feed every week, as roses are hungry plants.:D

Would they normally be expected to flower in the first year after planting?

That's not a leading question, I genuinely don't know the answer, but I know many shrubby plants and perennials wait until they've got their roots nice and comfy.

You have a point there, CLueless. But in my experience all the roses I have bought, potted or bare root have flowered in their first year especially if planted early in the year. In this case Music had planted them in February/March, so really I think they should have flowered especially when you think they've got to 8' ft in height.:D

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that. I planted a rose early this year too. It hasn't flowered, but then it hasn't got to 8ft yet either. In fact it pretty much hasn't done anything. Its not dead, it still has green leaves on it, but it just hasn't done anything new for months. I don't think my case is the norm though.

Hi ARMANDII. Thank you for the info. you refer to pruning next year. before planting the roses i referred to Wiseoldowl's sticky,on pruning climbing roses. according to his reference sheet climbing roses should not be pruned for 2 to 3 years after planting his words " let them grow then start to fan them out ( grow Horizontally etc). as i said my climbers are @8ft but i have fanned them as the fence is @30 ft long.my intentions is to intertwine both colours red/yellow.
          thank you,music.

I must admit I don't prune to the book, Music. I "tip prune" the climbers I've got just to keep them in bounds and selectively prune out any growth I don't think fits. Not pruning for 2 or 3 years is good advice, if, as in your case, you have the length of fence to cope. Just don't forget to feed them regularly:D:thumbsup:
