Lets say working in hospitals and nursing homes ect for 55 years has given me a different probability than you have regarding out come of end of life.
Have not checked here regarding this situation if its changed or not. its the feeding tube, the one that goes in the belly, it keeps folks alive that are suppose to be brain dead. The situation is, its not just real easy to just pull that tube, takes lots of courts ect. family stress, ect. The place I worked had a young lady who was born with lots of issues, her mental capabilities was like that of a 2 month old, IQ probably 10. she is kept alive by the feeding tube, staff turning her, staff changing her diapers, staff massaging her limbs, bathing ect. She has half a lung. Does not know her name, does not turn her head to sounds. She is about 26 years old now. Her mother her legal guardian. Yes, technically she is alive.
And my current library book on super-intelligent AI thinks another 300 yrs of humanity is probably about the tops we can hope for, so maybe we should just all stop worrying and party the days away.
I get it, it is messy - and I really can see where the idea of assisted suicide has come from. .. I just have absolutely zero faith in those who are wanting to implement it. Let's be honest, the current crop already see anyone over the age of 55 as a nuisance and over the age of 65 as a burden - Labour would much rather see you shuffle off this mortal coil so they can have your house and your millions.
That is one optimistic AI, I reckon Putin and Trump will have blown the lot of us to pieces by 2030 at the latest.
Do you just mean it is politicians you have no faith in @Fat Controller or are you including anyone who wants the right to assisted death ? This Labour govt. will probably not manage another term and they don't appear to have any serious intentions in this regard anyway. You may well be right in that they consider the "oldies" to be a costly PITA but no govt. here would get away with enacting a "forced death" on their citizens due to age. They have far sneakier ways to grab your assets and cash after all. People should have a choice over simply "existing" when they no longer wish to do so or being helped, if necessary, to call it a day. Not everyone in this position will be physically able to DIY and there is also the issue of obtaining the necessaries to do it.
Politicians, Civil Service, NHS, Police, BBC.. you name it. All the institutions that we'd have looked up to in years gone by and there is not one of them I have any faith in. As soon as lawyers/solicitors etc get involved, the whole picture just gets worse and worse. They might not have the power to get away with a forced death currently, but once this sort of path is opened, that is then a law being tweaked... not anything like the same scrutiny at that point as there is at the start. As you elude to, however, that wouldn't be being done overtly anyway... all they would need is another pandemic and they'd literally get away with murder anyway, and they are not short of creating the hysteria needed for that - hell,the BBC are experts at massaging the facts for a start.
Three hundred yrs is a best case scenario. Could happen in the next 25-50 yrs. The problem seems to be AI can be developed to do one thing, but nobody knows how to limit it to just that as it learns as it goes alone, training itself. So, humans might be able to coexist alongside it, but more likely its aims won't dovetail with ours and there is so reason for it to care about human fate. Things look likely to get very sticky for us.
I wouldn't worry until it can make a perfect cup of tea. Something that even the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation with it's Nutrimatic Drinks Machine couldn't achieve. See H2G2 volume the first.
We don't need super-intelligent AI. We need AI that can do the boring jobs we don't want to. Housework springs to mind!
