Does anyone have any ideas on this. I have tried a google search but am not coming up with anything.
I used to have a quite large (about 5') berberis that was in flower April/May with red flowers. It was already in the garden when I moved in but unfortunately died back after the first year. It was quite similar to a b.linearifolia orange king that I still have but like I say it had red flowers. I am pretty sure it was evergreen as well.
I have searched everywhere but I can't find it. All the ones I can find have either yellow flowers or orange flowers. Did I dream the whole thing??

PLenty with red leaves, or red berries ... don't know of one with red flowers though, sorry.

Are you sure it was a Berberis? Could it have been a Berberis-like shrub?

Are you sure it was berberis. It flowers April. There is a more exotic shrub which produces red flowers in May/June and for years I thought it was berberis. Naturally the name has shot out of my mind. It is less hardy but a thing of striking beauty if it is the same as the one you speak of. I'll have a look in my bible tomorrow and post the name.

It's Embothreum Coccineum- Chilean Fire Bush. I tried to get a pic but I messed up in Flickr. If you google this in images you will see it.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it definately wasn't a Chilean Fire Bush. It was definately a berberis but unfortunately it died after the first year after I moved in (about 8 years ago), it was quite large and I think it had been there a while . I was sure it had red flowers (at least in bud anyway) Maybe a dreamt the whole thing ?!
