You have to try very hard not to let your hands organise them as you plant-I think it must be something subconcious, I caught myself doing it the first time I put in bulbs.

I wouldn`t slit the grass but there`s nothing stopping me from doing it, just my bone idleness I reckon. I made a thick "dibber" from a laurel branch about 2-3cm thick jab it in the ground ( lawn) wriggle it a bit, a spot of sand in then the bulb and a bit of soil on top, the grass will cover it by the time the spring comes.

Loads of different ways-as many ways as there are gardeners I guess, but the casual drifts look hundreds of times better for spring bulbs.

I have received my 500 bulbs on the green. Now I am going to plant them nurtured in plenty of compost in the lawn......................again. Should I plant them in groups of say 25?

Perhaps in tear shaped drifts in groups of differing numbers?

They are gonna be gorgeous Granny.

I would plant in small clumps. They will look very solitary otherwise.

Read a useful article just the other day that suggested splitting them (when the clumps are a few years old); split into half, put the half back, split the other half into two and put each quarter in a different place. Do about 1/4 of the clumps each year - so the clump will be re-split after about 4 years.

I have a friend who opens their garden to the public JUST to show off their snowdrops ... I'm not quite (add liberal pinch of salt!!) at that stage yet.

Thank you Kirsten and Claire. That is a very good idea about the tear shape. They are going in this weekend and I am praying this time they will grow.:ntwrth:
