Brugmansia 2

Hi,
I bought a twin flower Brug for my Mum for Mothers day.
Potted it in a nice big pot. Went round there yesterday, and the leaves on it seem to be going a bit yellow and some are curling.
Is she watering it too much? Not enough?

Bashy if you have only just potted it give it chance to acclimatise to be flowering now it has been grown with heat conditions must be different now,they do like water keep it moist but don't let them sit in it,once it is established they are greedy feeders and a once a week feed would be about right, when the frosts are gone get it outside on the patio,you could put it out on mild days now and bring it in at night,watch out for strong winds as the foliage can soon be snapped off.

Bashy I use disolved chicken pellets a couple of handfulls in a watering can,this may be a bit inconvenient for mum so you could use Miracle- Grow all purpose soluble plant food N P K value 24-8-16 or any soluble fertilizer that is around that proportion.

Walnut. I use Growmore. Is that O.K.

 

Growmore is a more general fertiliser NPK 7.7.7 better with Miracle- grow or Phostrogen general purpose.

Novice/Nervous Brugmansia owner here! I bought mine last summer, about 3ft tall, pale orange colour but haven't seen any flowers yet! Planted it in the garden last summer and within 3 days the slugs did such a number on it that it had ZERO leaves and all I had was a stick! I dug it back up, potted it up and it's been living indoors ever since and is gradually produced huge, healthy leaves.

I'm thinking of putting it in a large terracotta pot and Vaseline the base of the pot so that the slugs give my Brug a chance. My questions:

1) I'm in south Devon and it hasn't been lower than 7oC at night for several weeks. Can I risk leaving it out over night at this temperature?
2) The plant is 3 feet high and it has a 'Y' with one side pruned away. Should I prune it again in some way? Or just leave it? To me, it seems to keep growing upwards with more and more leaves. I'm after flowers but want to do justice to the look of the plant too.

Any advice would be appreciated!

 

Hi Op,I leave mine out most nights but keep a vigilant eye on the weather any cooler than that wrap it or bring it in,one of my Arboreas is actually outside and flowering at the moment but this is one of the hardiest of the brugs.
The plants are actually trees, when grown from seed the main stem can be 4,5 or 6ft tall before it "y"s only then will it flower usually any that flower shorter than this are grown from cuttings taken above a "y" don't prune it let it grow and it will produce flowers, it's usually the second year before they produce flowers from seed.

 

I thought theses things where easy to grow from seed! I bought some Datura seed from T+M, soaked them for 24 hours, sowed them on damp compost and lightly covered with vermiculite. That was over six weeks ago and not one has germinated :( I keep them on a sunny windowsill during the day and in the airing cupboard at night. Do the seed have a short shelf life?? Or am I doing something very wrong?

 

Hi Terrier, I planted about 8 Datura 6/7 weeks ago, first one appeared after a week, then shrivelled up and died, second one after 2 weeks, ive just potted it on because it has 6 leave's, and the 3rd one was just showing through this morning, so hang on a while... There just winding you up

 

Thanx YDD, did you soak your seeds first? I've just put some more seed into warmish water. Tomorrow I'm going to try sowing it on damp sand and covering with fine vermiculite. No idea what the germination temperature should be but I suspect I should keep it around 24 deg. Best of luck with yours

 

Forgot to say, mine are on the windowsill, I used Sowing compost and No i didn't soak them first..
