Ginger Roots

    Asking for a friend:

    I have been given these Ginger Lily roots, what should I do with them?

    Obviously both sections have been grown in pots not in the ground. If I decide they are too much bother to grow on can I use them in cooking? I really like fresh ginger in things like stir fry. I nicked the papery skin of the root/ tuber out if the pot and it is green and looks alive underneath. Clueless what to do with them.

        Interesting! Had to google it, here is some info. Mr Google also says the rhizomes are edible.

        I have only grown ginger var. "On Offer at Morrison's" as a houseplant, the rhizomes root readily but the foliage is sparse and looks like it has died a week ago. The Hedychium variety looks much more promising, good catch @JWK :blue thumb:

          Yes, you can eat all of it. You can also plant any bits cut off and they should grow. :blue thumb:

          We use a lot of ginger in cooking and it's also good to put some in honey and lemon drink when feeling poorly. Whisky is optional :heehee:

                I presume that it is culinary ginger if it's not it may not be as strong tasting as as what you would buy in a supermarket.

                Having tried growing the supermarket stuff I would say it works but it's not worth the hassle.

                    Agree very much, it's a thrill to get the things sprouting but the plants are somewhat disappointing and crops might not be huge. Fun to try though! :)
