IME getting stuff to germinate is the easy part! It's the cossetting and growing on for months that has been the downfall here. Especially with sciarid fly invasions.

I had an Aunt like that always had secateurs in her handbag, didn't stop at NT places, but any garden she visited and was even known to lean over a hedge or nip down a drive and snip a piece off something she liked.
Given the amount she pinched she wasn't that good at rooting them.

            I was aware.
However imagine: if instead of "stealing" a bit, while she made a cup of tea and you put the work into getting a bit. You'd taken her literally and come back in the early hours dressed in dark clothes, wearing a balaclava with a head torch and trowel. The reception would not have been a cup of tea, but flashing blue lights and an uncomfortable time explaining you had permission to come back and steal something from her garden.

If you join the RHS they do a seed distribution scheme. It can include some of the rarities from their collection which are not available commercially.

Oh that’s ok Nigel, I thought you might have taken offence at me suggesting you’d swiped it:) I did laugh as years ago my Mum spied some very nice Holly with loads of berries ( it was Christmas time)in a private estate that had a public walkway next door to it. She volunteered my father to return the next day, nip over the fence and lop off a few branches for decoration purposes.
We went back the next day and while Mum and I were keeping look out my Dad climbed the fence and was in the process of removing a few branches when a estate worker/ security guard appeared from the other direction. :roflol: Dad was caught red handed despite trying to hide the branches behind his back, Mum and I just walked on as he was “nothing to do with us”!! My Dad was quite well known in the area but not for stealing plants tho, he was mortified and furious with my Mum. I thought it was hysterical being about 10 years old at the time which made my Dad even more cross.

                        Hi

                        spring has sprung

I had this variety in a pot but a magpie had pulled the labels up, but fortunately I had put a label in the bottom of the pot , so when I was planting out amazing I found the label.
This variety as far as I know is not available in the Uk

:old: Pinching cuttings and losing out when they dont take :frown: .

I have more luck swapping cuttings and seeds from members on this Friendly Gardening Forum .

Maybe some truth in what my mum used to say ' Stolen fruits dont flourish ':psnp:

I thought this odd thing for her to come out with until I realised that when she would say 'just stand here '............ that I was shielding her not from the sun !!!!!!

But from her snipping a cutting from a particular plant she didnt have :heehee:

And she was truthful as they hardly ever rooted.:cry3:

While on about swaps, Spruce I have a deeper orange Day Lily very much like yours , Let me know if you want to do a honest exchange:wub2:

In Finnish the saying is the opposite. And if you are given a cutting or a seed, it's important not to say thanks as that would doom the plant.

Interestingly, RHS stores sell portable mini secateurs in a neat pocket to slip into your handbag

Sorry dont have a name as these were one thing my mum managed to get going , says she sort of saw the intresting orange roots in a wheelbarrow on one of her visits to a park and into her handbag it went.
foliage only just coming through , in a few weeks it will flower so I shall get a photo, some of the large flowers have a red streak through the petals .
