Weeds Identification and Treatment

Hello. Sorry if I’m posting duplicates.

These weeds are taking over my hedge base and I want to know how to get rid without impacting the hedge growth.

Can somebody identify them please? I’m happy to hand remove or use any recommended products. I just don’t want to make a wrong step.

The second one looks like Herb Robert - a wild form of geranium. Very pretty flower. It's easy to pull out by hand.

 

and very smelly! All can be removed and no chemicals are needed.

 

Agree with herb robert. The other two look like one of the low sprawly campanulas, probably a garden escapee.

 

I'd pull the herb robert up, to stop it spreading, and probably leave the campanula. We also have a privet hedge with campanula growing around the base and it doesn't compete much and looks nice when in flower. It's easy to just chop it back when you prune the hedge.

 

Campanula is a good plant for pollinators too.

 

I'd agree about the campanulas for a mature established privet hedge, but I think this is the one that @himartinhere posted about a day or two ago, which is relatively new and he wants it to get established and thicken up. In that situation I think it's better to keep the base clear.

 

Is it Campanula or Lesser Celandine, just a thought?

 

Your hedge would benefit an application of organic mulch, to maintain moisture and support essential soil organisms in the upper soil layers where Privet has its roots. It would also make removal of any subsequent weeds simple.

 

+1 for Campanula and Herb Robert. Definitely whizz the latter out before it has a chance to flower and seed!
