@CarolineL I had a quick look at raddianum - maybe Adiantum venustum is what you are after? It looks dainty and elfin yet is tough and has a spreading habit. I don't know how many similar species there are, this is the one I'm familiar with.

@ClematisDbee, there's a specialist fern supplier, Fernatix, that was featured on GW quite some time ago. They are Chelsea gold medal winners and have since made their operation online only. I haven't used them but others here may know them.

Thanks @micearguers . You may be right. I dismissed it because the first images that came up were a bit "linear", but looking further, there appears to be quite a lot of variety of form.

I have Adiantum venustum which may be what you're looking for? Have a look at these - perhaps A. x mairisii?

Thanks @LG_ it could be that, because I think mine was deciduous. Or even Adiantum capillus-veneris.
I think I'm going to do some online shopping!

Thankyou, @micearguers and @Plantminded, very helpful. I am sure I will be able to find some suitable plants by following your suggestions. My old garden had a few different ferns and I miss having them. I think ferns add a little bit of magic and mystery, a feeling of timelessness.

Does a fern waste energy keeping old stems going?
I'm tempted to cut them off now. I doubt we'll have a hard frost here. Famous last words!

I usually leave one old frond, for food-making purposes, and cut off the rest to give the new fronds space to come through. I did mine last week.

I’ve cut all my old fronds off @BB3, just in time as there were lots of new ones emerging.

                    Hi all ,

I finally planted out my royal fern , fronds starting to uncurl.

I had to use a saw to cut around the edge of the pot just didn’t want to come out.

hopefully it will like it’s new home.

@Spruce can't find an empathetic emoji so I'll say I feel your pain. Similar problems with fig and some sort of grass.
It's worth the effort - usually.
I've had to cloak a nice pot with at towel and whack it with a hammer to get a rose out. Pot or rose? Rose or pot?

                        Thanks

I read they used to use that ferns roots crown to pot up orchids .. as I said before I never thought it was hardly until I saw some huge ones at Wisley and then double checked on here . My new Zealand fern has started to send out its 1st frond of the year

Can someone identify this fern and should it be doing that?
