I’ve spent the morning gathering three trug-fulls of molehill soil, so that I could cut the grass of the more formal area, and paths this afternoon. Once the grass was cut, I could find the dips in the grass, and fill them with the molehill soil.

I potted on the seedlings - courgettes, squash, some of the chillies. I also tried taking some Japanese maple cuttings.

        19

I got a bit distracted when sowing as it's so busy elsewhere in the new garden.

Sadly my friends are not the kind of people who would enjoy a cucumber plant or three, but The Child has many likeminded souls in her garden volunteering circles.

Some will go there and the rest that won't fit into the greenhouse will have to take pot luck among the flowers and perennials. I'll tell them it's cottage garden style. :)

Last Divas potted up, another round of watering done.

A brief smell of petrichor, then back to baking.
          Debating whether to sow cucumbers.
Courgettes are still bashful. Unlike them.

Put some of my Bordeaux coloured sunfowers outside to make space for more sowings in the polytunnel. They're bursting to be planted but OH hasn't rotavated their new home yet. After watering the other babies and checking on the chooks I came in to sort out some seeds to swo and ended up back on the PC cos it's a while since I ordered them and I couldn't remember what they'd do.

They included Enkianthus Campanulatus, Indigo Amblyantha, Lippia Dulcis, Mirabilis Longiflora "Angel trumpets", Digitalis alba, Oenothera versicolor "Sunset Boulevard" and Papaver rhoeas "White bridal silk". I hope they approve of current temperature levels in the polytunnel. I had to take off my top!

All the squash plants are growing well, as are the cucumbers and the more recently potted on brassicas, chilies and ornamentals. They can go outside in a few days once the Ice Saints have had their days. It's certainly been cold enough indoors here to need jumpers and throws in the evenings.

Planted a number Papaver orientale out, also a Yellow "Tiger lily". Pruned a scandent decorative Rubus. Removed the wind scorched ends from a number of shrubs, going back to the first shoot.
                    Then more weeding.

I spent most of the day removing the gravel, taking up the Terram and digging out my Potting Table area. It's only about 1m x 1m so not a big job but I was anxious not to do my back in so took it very carefully.
I've now lowered the ground level so that I can't see over the fence as I felt a bit exposed now that the big tree has been felled.
It then rained (oh thank you, thank you) so will finish off tomorrow.

I got the seedlings outside to harden off, and then weeded a load of Marjoram out of the herb bed, where it is trying for total domination.

I deemed it time to sow some more mangetout peas (only one plant up from first sowing), and some climbing and dwarf French beans. Hopefully they will germinate despite the drought!!

A friend said that she would like any flowering plants that I could offer, so I went around the garden looking for suitable candidates. Nigella, foxgloves, dianthus anatolicus, Veronica, saxifraga Urbium, geranium sanguinium (both normal deep pink and a pale pink) duly dug out, potted up, and loaded into the car ready for tomorrow’s delivery.

seedlings brought in for the evening, and now time for Eurovision !

We are discovering, @lizzie27, that the rather large gravel area at the back of the house has a lovely layer of felty weed membrane under all the gravel and weeds which include deep rooted thristle and bindweed and the usual annual suspects found near birdfeeders and blown in. We don't want to clear it all but I do want to make a seat high walled area in it for growing herbs, aromatics and a few climbers for privacy.

Going to be a big job.

We had no plans for ANY garden work today. We had elevenses in the sun in the garden (with chocolate cake), lunch out by the sea (Italian restaurant), a round of mini golf (which I lost!!), ice cream mid afternoon, and home for tea.
Then I suddenly realised plants needed watering, got delayed by removing deadwood from one of the jasmine bushes and one of the lilac trees, weeded round the raspberries, and generally forgot the OH, who was patiently waiting for me indoors.
