I hope your Mum-in-law is OK and recovers well, @Butterfly6.

Maybe you should do a Covid test @Goldenlily26.

I'm not a tennis fan either. I can't sit on the sofa for long enough to watch a match. I used to play tennis before I had shoulder problems.

I've had some alarming WhatsApp message from my children in France. They are on red alarm alerts for hot weather, except for son in Dordogne, that's amber.

Plumber has been. The main tap that turns off the water, just before the meter, developed a drip. Plumber says it should be OK now. I think it needs changing.

I've tidied up the shady pots and planted the parsley and basil and re-potted the smaller pot of chives.

Feeling virtuous because I've cleaned all the downstairs windows, inside and out.

      Good evening to you all!

We only got up to 34°C .... only - we were in for a much higher temperature. The temperature will drop to 23°C tomorrow morning at 6am but be back up by 8am to 25°C. I do not venture outside during these afternoon temperatures. I hope your afternoon wasn't too uncomfortable @Obelix-Vendée Not a tennis fan either.

I hope you find your mum-in-law feeling better tomorrow @Butterfly6 Has she some respite from this heat?

Maybe humans can play tennis in this heat, but I thought it rather cruel to make the horses run at Royal Ascot.

Have problems shutting my eyes in the afternoons @Ergates Wish I could find that sleep zone. With these hot nights, I am feeling overtired now as it is hard to stay asleep - even with my slicker pads which inevitably are lost in the bed!!

Although the swallows haven't nested here so far, they spend their afternoons under the eaves of the porch - I see them from the kitchen window - their beaks are open in the heat. They have 3 bowls around the garden to quench their thirst. There are about 5 of them.

Had a lovely meal for my friend's birthday in a restaurant on Saturday night. It was 33°C at 10pm. We were so hot as after a couple of glasses of wine, the body was warm. It was too hot to sit outside for a final glass of wine!! I think we should get some cooler - ha ha! weather from Thursday onwards!!

Have a pleasant end of evening everyone.

Welcome home @Liriodendron. Enjoy settling back into your familiar surroundings. @Butterfly6 I was very sorry to read about your MIL and would like to wish her a speedy recovery. Poor you @Goldenlily26, to feel so unwell when the heat probably isn't helping either. It must have been reassuring to hear about your sister's ceremony. Ooops @lizzie27, I think that @Ergates's suggestion is a sound one.

I do hope that your family will be safe @Busy-Lizzie. Would you like to come round and do my windows??
@Tui34, I have mentioned before about the absence of my twittery summer visitors. The skies are so empty and I feel quite sad.

Surprised none of you seem to like tennis, I could watch it all day and usually do! Seven Brits through today and hopefully more tomorrow. Have it on in the kitchen and usually plan to iron and bake when its on.

It has been very hot here so lots of ladies cried off from patch. Those who came did little work but had a good natter. No more meetings now till mid September.

Ran some errands on the way home and then started watering. Squashes in the polytunnel very happy and have had to be trimmed. More of the same tomorrow so shutters down, windows closed and staying indoors between 9am and 5pm and keeping hydrated. Should be cooler on Wednesday by a few degrees and mid 20s on Thursday. 73 out of 96 mainland French departments on orange alert for heatwave dangers and 14 of them moved to red today.

Take care everyone, whatever your weather. Hope you enjoy your daughter's visit @lizzie27

PS @Loraine3 OH does our ironing whilst watching golf, or cricket, or rugby. He'll watch any sport except synchronised swimming.

So glad I am not in France, could not cope with those temperatures. Can you create any mud patches for the swallows, @Tui34, just in case they want to try some nest building?
Can’t be bothered to watch tennis, especially with all the shrieking and grunting involved these days. Funnily enough, I can remember years ago really enjoying listening to the Wimbledon commentary on the radio. I have only watched cricket when my son was playing school ( plus county and regional youth) matches. However, when my daughter was tiny, I would keep myself awake during the night feeds by listening to England playing in Australia, and got quite hooked on it.

MIL sounded quite bright and completely her normal self on the phone today. OH is going down tomorrow visit tomorrow. She has some fans and her sitting room and bedroom are north facing so that helps a little. The stroke hasn’t done any obvious damage, thank goodness, so fingers crossed the new medication keeps her BP down.

Thank you everyone for your good wishes, it really means a lot x

                      Hello July.jpg
White rabbits everyone and a pinch and a punch for the first of the month. It was so nice to sign in and read your news about your MIL @Butterfly6 - we need more happy news these days. @Loraine3 there are a few of us who like tennis  though I agree about the ridiculous noises made by some players and I prefer watching the men rather than the women. I love watching sport on TV as I reckon you get the best views but the only sports I am bored rigid by are football, Formula 1 and golf so I never watch those.

                        Good morning to you all!!

We were up at sparrow's fart this morning - and out. A torrid night to be honest. Soooo stuffy - even with the windows open enough to let air in. There was none to let in anyway!!

The alerts are out all right @Busy-Lizzie Your family seem to be getting higher temperatures than we are down here. We do get a sea breeze. As long as people don't go out during the afternoons to walk or work, it should be all right. Tradesmen and Council workers usually start very early in the mornings and finish around 1pm for the day. But there are red alerts for many departments. My Ipad shows a little cloud and some rain on Sunday. More humid weather for mosquito breeding!

I'm not surprised @Obelix-Vendée that patch people cried off.

We had a sort of mini tornado on Friday afternoon. Quite a noise and it blew 2 rather sturdy pots off the terrace and has ripped some of my pergola shading. Oh well!

The swallow contingent flash fly through my pergola mornings and evenings - they are quite cheeky @Ladybird4 And there are lots of them. Maybe all yours are down here. I seem to have a "family" of five that want some shadow during the afternoons. @Ergates there is plenty of wet dust around the outside tap and water bowls - I'm still hoping they will nest.

I picked a lettuce when I came back from my bike/run this morning - in the cool - I have a basin outside to wash vegetables in the spring water. The water was tepid believe it or not!! It hadn't even had time to cool down in the hose during the night. I watered Sunday evening and thought to give everyone a drink this morning. But the ground seemed damp enough - so that will be a late evening/night effort tonight.

It's nearly 9am, so shutters down and windows closed and it's welcome to "Molesville" !! A bt of HW and I have some chicken thighs to marinate for today and tomorrow. It's so peaceful sitting outside in the shade these early mornings. So I wish you all a peaceful and zen first day of July.

Horrible airless night last night. It's nearly 27 already this morning. I gave in last eve and got the sprinkler out. Tbh it wasn't just to water the garden but to help cool things down, very pleasant sitting out down there, pity we couldn't move the bed out there might have got more sleep.
Though I agree about the screeching and grunting, we like tennis here, in fact we are going to Wimbledon on Thursday. My wife put her name into the ballot last year and for the first time we got lucky.

Good morning all! Back home from a wonderful holiday in Finland.

We were pleased to find reasonable temperatures for our return, though it's apparently reached 28C while we were away, and the garden has grown enormously - including the lawn, of course...

There's a young magpie searching the strawberry bed at the moment. He's just found his breakfast! I'll go out and see if he's left any for us, once I've put on another load of washing.

Hope July begins well for you all!

Good morning. We have started the day with a heavy mist so realtively cool in the mid 20s. It's cleared now tho and is set to get to 33C. My agricultural forecast says the soil temperature will be 40C, hence the need for watering veggies to keep their roots cool and plants growing well and not frying.

I shall do some gentle dead-heading and check all my critter water bowls around the garden before it gets too hot but will then stay indoors, shutters at half mast, till this evening.

Glad you're home safely and enjoyed yourselves @Liriodendron

We had swallows nests in the ruin when we arrived @Tui and their number has not increased in the one room we can safely store stuff. However, we now have nests in the 'cave' and in our stone built garden shed. It can get very messy but we don't mind and just wait till September to clean up. We also have house-martins swooping about the plot - plenty of nesting sites in the neighbours' barns and insects in our plot and pond as well as around neighbouring horses, goats and cattle.

Have a great start to the month everyone.

Morning from a cool, dull Wales. It was a sticky old night, though.
We had the fan on, so we did sleep.
We're going to friends for lunch and I'm really looking forward to it. Her garden, though not large, is crammed with choice plants.
I shall do my tour of inspection and watering. Still not much rain in the forecast.
