I have a couple of DS in a large container. It was big enough for a year or so as they started off quite small.
Despite being in good light, they got quite leggy.
Might the compost have been a bit too rich?
P.S. They're going into the ground this year.

I think DS has a slightly lax habit, @BB3. I cut mine back a bit in the autumn and it doesn’t seem to have minded. New leaves are just starting to emerge. So, I wouldn’t worry about clipping it to the shape you want (within reason). :)

I think that's the variety that I had in a pair of hanging baskets last year. They had a fairly lax habit despite being described as upright, more-or-less hid the white busy lizzies that I planted around them. They're still there, and started to sprout a few weeks ago, so I've pruned them down hard. I think I'll leave them in the baskets for this summer, but without anything else planted around them. They'll get a feed once they get properly going, and maybe some of the slow release stuff.

They’ll grow to around 1m if you let them

Thanks everyone. I'll give them a good prune when I move them.

My Delta Sarah is still in quite a small pot. It needs watering twice a day, but has grown well. I am wondering whether to keep it potted or put it in the ground. I would give it a larger pot. I have only kept this quite small as it had a teeny root system when I got it this time last yr and it would mean excavating a smaller hole for it if I plant it out.

            So, pot or ground?

My two survived the winter in hanging baskets on the back of the house. They aren't flowering as well as they did last year, so maybe I should have changed the compost. Or maybe they just don't like the hot weather.

My 2 large bushes - now 7 years old ,are having an almost flower less year. They didn't like the wet Spring and a lot of the flower stems are "blind".

Oh, that's interesting. My Hawkshead and Flashlight have produced almost no flowers. Normally they are dripping with blooms. My DS has some, but mostly on the end of stems, not over the whole bush.

I went the opposite (How does that not surprise us.....Ed) and took mine out of the ground, where it was not doing so well against competitors and put it into a tall pot (I use tall flip-top black kitchen waste bins after throwing away the top). Delta Sarah is now romping away and full of flowers. I never use shop compost in a pot but a mix of top soil and my own compost with a tiny scoop of Bio-char. I usually put a scoop of farmyard manure from an organic farm in as well.

Thanks, @kindredspirit. Sounds like it is a fuchsia happy in a container, so I might pot mine on and abandon plans for it to go in the ground. I really need a square planter, so it won't topple in windy conditions.

I have two in the ground. Last year they had masses of flowers one in France and one in Norfolk. This year they started to grow well with strong stems and big leaves, then I was in France for most of June. It was hot and dry in Norfolk. The latest leaves are small and there are very few flowers on the one in Norfolk. I don't think it was because of a wet spring, they like moisture, I think they don't like hot dry weather. I think it would have been OK if it had been watered.

I've noticed a hawkshead has been doing really well this year as it's near a new trach. Jas. that I've been watering frequently. I think you're right about the watering @Busy-Lizzie
