I have a long fence along my patio. I’ve been using diagonal wooden trellis to grow 3 jasmine plants previously. Is trellis the right thing? Or is there a preferred way of getting them to grow and spread along the fence? I’ve had to move them so just checking before replanting. These will also now go in the ground in a border be in troughs.

Jasmines will love the trellis. If you want the trellis covered, just tie in long shoots from the jasmine horizontally. I am not sure if jasmine will enjoy growing in pots unless you use very big containers. You will need to top up the soil each year as well as water regularly and copiously, and feed

Your trachelospermum jasminoides (Star Jasmine) wants to grow to about 40ft x 25ft so will struggle in anything other than a huge container.

I'm not sure what you mean by - These will also now go in the ground in a border be in troughs.

If you plan to sink the troughs into the soil, why not just plant the jasmine in the soil?
Looking at the 1st pic - it looks like there are some substantial conifers (?) on the other side of the fence that will deprive your jasmine of water and nutrients.
As said above, they're very hungry plants and need a lot of space, water and nutrients, and a sunny aspect.
