Hi all, I am looking for any recommendations for evergreen (flowering or not) shrubs that are happy in large pots. They will be on my patio which gets sun at least 6hrs a day and is quite sheltered. I have already decided on a male and female Skimmia for 2 pots and I've 2 more pots to fill. Thanks..

Escallonia and/or Pittosporum would be my choice @Harmony

Rosemary. It's not just a lovely shrub that flowers on-off throughout the year, but is a very useful herb in the kitchen so having a potful on the patio is perfect :)

My new adventure is actually a small tree, Arbutus Unedo. I have the regular type which might eventually go into the ground, and a "Compacta" the seller mistakenly sent me and let me keep for free

Here's my youngster just now, starting to flower.

I think this is a euonymus. It needs a prune. It survives neglect, drought, sun and shade. You can shape it, if you're that way inclined.

For contrasting foliage and movement, try a small variegated Phormium.

I doubt that Skimmias will be happy in that amount of sun, long term.
Also, when you say large pots, what exactly do you mean @Harmony ? Anything woody will need a very good volume of a soil based medium to be happy long term in a container, especially in full sun in summer. It can be very hard to keep them well hydrated, even when there's that green top growth helping to avoid evaporation.
Many Hebes will be ok though, but there's a huge choice ,so it depends on what you prefer aesthetically. I've grown H. buxifolia in different gardens which does well in full sun. Some are less hardy than others, so again- your location/conditions/climate come into play. I grow one called Margaret/Margrit, which can succumb to harsher weather. It's better in the ground than a pot because of that.

Also - bear in mind that terracotta containers can get wet then freeze in winter, so if you have those, you may need to protect them if you get proper winter weather every year.

Agree about pot size. In particular, for shrubs don't choose ones that are a lot narrower than they are high . They seem to be fashionable but are no good for anything but annuals. Plant roots want room to spread out sideways as well as downwards.
