    Indeed.
Its the same thing again. British growers are forbidden in using certain seed dressings lest they may be picked up by flowering hedgerow plants and transmitted to bees. No such concerns abroad.
The BSC price for beet is negotiated by the National Farmers Union and handed down price to growers. The NFU is not a democratic body, all members do not get to vote for its policies or negotiations. NFU owns/controls Red Tractor in conjunction with the British Retail Consortium so no choices here for growers if they wish to farm here.

Everything now is about price, not just in farming, if you can buy cheaper from abroad then we will, that is what has ruined all our manufacturing industry, it nothing new, it started years ago.
We do tend to cause a lot of it off ourselves by not making sure the imports are of the same quality or produced under the same restrictions as our home produced stuff.

But that brings us back to manufacturing not competing with Far East sweatshops.

Isn't some of this where Trump is coming from, home produced always above imports.;)

Yes a neonicotinoid seed dressing was used in the UK to prevent aphid attack as the aphid carry sugar beet virus yellows disease. Breeders are working on resistant varieties of sugar beet.
Until relatively recently, after the banning of neonicotinoid insecticides, the UK government gave a derogation for use on beet seed and also on rape seed. Young rape plants get munched by a flea beetle and the seed dressing deals with these.
France in particular grants these derogations quite cheerfully here the wildlife and countryside groups kicked up everytime. Quite right too in my opinion.

Maybe we should just give up trying to produce anything, if we ban an insecticide it should be illegal to import anything from abroad where that insecticide has been used.

Oh hang on a minute, we would all be paying a hell of a lot more for our food or starving.

In the same way as we have brought in green policies that have forced our industry into decline and passed all our greenhouse gas emissions to other countries.

We might as well give up. The deal Starmer has struck with Tango Man apparently means we could end up importing meat full of steroids and god knows what else, along with chicken soaked in chlorine.

Well we could but who will care ? Perhaps you will prefer the chicken that still carries those micro-organisms that sanitary conditions control. its your choice; and its available to you now. Make that choice while you still have it.

I think the chlorinated chicken thing is over done.
Probably only the fast food places would use it and I'm sure supermarkets would still sell British chicken if you pay extra, maybe as I can't see how it's going to be cheaper anyway.
I assume the chlorine to get rid of salmonella which I assume ours still has.
        Hence cook it properly.

The concentration of chlorine in wash water is 5mg/litre in US (UK drinking water 1mg/ltr.) However it has been replaced in many plants by peracetic acid (vinegar and hydrogen peroxide) due to public perception. It is a moot point whether one wishes micro-organisms dead or alive...
Processes in Vietnam and Thailand (sources of catering chicken meats) are not transparent. UK borders should in my view be active in checking/ testing all imports of foodstuffs, rather than rely on trust. Especially when it is clear that no fair trade is possible without equivalent standards/assurance. But it seems only a race to the bottom is required.(no pun intended)
