@LG_ it was on page 3 of this thread (for me, not sure if number-of-posts-per-page is customisable). And yes, you shared a picture of a tiny fern in a pot with Acer :-)
Do you get seedlings more often?

Below a wonderfully triangular-shaped frond of Gymnocarpium dryopteris.

The trouble is with ferns that you can't identify even if you've got the labels in a box, is come winter, you've no idea what's dead and what's dormant.
I'm thinking anything that comes up in the spring, I'll mark with a D. It's the best I can do.

Polypodium calirhiza Sarah Lyman This is one of my favourite ferns currently regrowing like mad after it's summer holiday from May until the autumn rains. At least it doesn't need watering and looks fresh at this time of year.
Comes from the Napa valley area.

Do you know the species @NigelJ ? Its serrated fronds look very characteristic, but haven't been able to find a match yet.

@micearguers Sorry I forgot to add the species like I normally do.

Is it then evergreen through the winter, @NigelJ?

@ViewAhead yes it's evergreen; in the Napa Valley it's more a case of dormant in the dry season (summer)and green through the wet season (winter); how hardy it is I don't really know as the Napa valley is pretty much frost free.
In my garden most of the ferns I grow are evergreen.

The first two are self seeded but the others are part of what we originally planted and are beginning to look good whilst most of the rest of the garden is fading
