My Magnolia stellata has berries! I haven't noticed them before. Maybe I will try to germinate some.

Late in the day for a few I’ve spotted here in our garden in the Valleys. My hanging basket I do different with Bishops children grown from seed , a flower still on my new cherry chocolate Cosmos. Pink Marshmallow fuchsia. A Kafir Lily and a Persicaria glowing around a rusty flower ornament IMG_7698.jpeg IMG_7696.jpeg IMG_7690.jpeg IMG_7685.jpeg IMG_7675.jpeg IMG_7696.jpeg IMG_7696.jpeg IMG_7690.jpeg IMG_7685.jpeg IMG_7675.jpeg

Thank you for your kind offer @Michael Hewett, I'll keep it in mind. :) I'll see if I can find it locally first and will let you know either way.

Oh I don't know @Sheal - interesting thought! I believe it's a selection from wild collection. I'm afraid I have gone a bit mad on roscoea and hedychium, because Farmyard Nurseries have a good selection. Like Oscar Wilde said "I can resist everything except temptation"

I wonder what that would look like if you were able to germinate seed @Baalmaiden? A new variety maybe :)
I didn't know how they were normally propagated, but assumed cuttings or grafting, so I had a search and found a good item on Burncoose's site
Magnolia - Propagation - Burncoose Nurseries

It was interesting reading. I was quite surprised that it was a common way of propagating them. Hope it works for you :blue thumb:

I've grown magnolia from seed and getting your first flower can be a slow process, one took 30yrs, another about 20.

@pete @Baalmaiden I was going to try when my mum's old camellia produced seeds. Then I thought: I'll have to wait at least 10 years, and the original plant isn't a great flower, so it isn't worth it!
I did that with rhododendron fortunei . Waited years and got a very boring mauve flower.

Thanks for that magnolia seed link @fairygirl. which was very interesting. I too, noticed berries today on my 20 year old magnolia stellata which I'd never seen before. I was a bit worried that the magnolia was producing seed before dying but hopefully not.

That's the one @Sheal ! I had a look at the label yesterday. Apparently Farmyard get quite a lot of plants from Crug. They've also recently had some from Picton Castle, so I may have to visit again...
