It's not birds as under cloches and we cant see slugs any where..husband thinks its something in the soil..l'll have to read up to see if its wireworms etc..l was so hopeful at first, so very disappointed, but wont give up my experiemnt trying to grow something over the winter :)

The hard work always pays off though @Peaceful Gardener.
I've used many a pallet during my lifetime @Retired, [I don't find them very good for compost bins unless they're on hard landscaping, as they rot too quickly ] and there are plenty of places I can get them, but the main problem I have is that I don't have a lot of the tools I used to have. I had to 'escape' a situation when moving here, so the crowbars etc weren't really a priority. Didn't take my extending ladders either, which was an even bigger loss, but that's how it is.
I managed to lever off the pallet slats using a combo of a wide chisel and a bolster, and a hammer [I have a peen hammer too but didn't neeed that] but my wrists protest a fair bit nowadays!
Didn't do anything yesterday apart from tearing up some card/paper for the compost bin, and today isn't going to be favourable for outdoor stuff either, so I'll get a walk, and then see if there's a dry spell to empty the rest of one compost bin for mulching. Maybe some painting instead.
I spent a lot of yesterday roasting veg/making soup, baking and some housework, and dealing with wrong items delivered. That will continue today too as I then had to get ink for the printer to do return labels. Sigh...
                1st world problems eh?

                  Hi,

Well done and pat on back @Peaceful Gardener it looks so much better. I found clearing the ivy to be a terrible job; the dust got everywhere and I lost count at over 80 full bin bags all from a smallish area; ivy is horrible stuff once it gets established. :wallbanging:

Stripping pallets without decent tools is very hard work and lots of slats tend to split but you're doing well @fairygirl with the modest tool kit you still have. I think you're in for some bad weather from Saturday as storm Amy is heading your way so you got the felt sorted out just in time. :dbgrtmb:

                  kind regards, Col.

Thanks @Retired . The proper weather's to start coming in tomorrow really, although it rained a fair bit yesterday, and we have weather warnings for wind/rain for the next couple of days, but most of it in this area is later in the day, so we may get lucky. It's Argyll and further north and west that are getting the brunt. It's always quite breezy/windy where I am, but it's just the way it is, and you get used to it. Can't do much about it anyway!
I'll be moving the bench/table somewhere that it can't get cowped though ;)

I like ivy. Mine is starting to flower, which is great for late pollinators etc, and it's also brilliant for birds - both for hiding in, and for nesting in spring [mainly sparrows], although it's my neighbour across the way who has them nesting in his ivy. They spend a lot of time eating in my feeders though which is lovely - although noisy! It forms quite a bit of my main boundary, but you just have to keep on top of it.

My overgrown ivy, growing over the long gone outdoor privy, is just coming into flower. I feel I should get rid of it but the bees love the flowers and quite a few birds have started using it as nesting haven.

I find using the leverage of a mattock helps start getting pallets dismantled.
Not much gardening for me the last few days. My wife had a Cataract operation yesterday. My turn to look after her for a change. The main thing they seem to say about after is to avoid dust so the days before were devoted to preparing in advance. Deep house clean, shopping etc.
Might get a bit done today as it's dry if dull and overcast.

Yesterday we transferred the Amelanchier from the large pot, where it's resided for three years, into the ground. Hoping for great growth from now onwards! Filled the vacant pot with a Pittosporum Garnettii which was in a smaller pot and put that into a more visible position. Now what shall I put into the vacant pittosporum pot?

                            Hi,

Brons gardens_490.JPG I'm delighted to have completed Bron's memorial garden just now; four shrubs at the back and three mixed vinca at the front. The shrubs will soon occupy more space and I hope the vinca knows which way to grow.

Brons gardens_491.JPG One of the vinca's; the weed suppressing fabric was cut in each case as a cross and peeled back allowing just enough space to use a trowel to dig the holes; the soil was then made good and the fabric neatly replaced; I took a lot of care not to scatter soil around.
                            Brons gardens_492.JPG
I created three flower beds for Bron; one now the memorial garden and two remain as flower beds; here's one now fully planted with wallflowers; pansies and today three mixed vinca; the middle flower bed is OK until next year; it's already been tidied.

Items I buy from J Parkers have never let me down; todays delivery could go in immediately. More jobs ticked off. I'm grounded tomorrow due to friends paying me a visit.

                            Kind regards, Col.

Your memorial garden looks lovely and they should be quick to grow.

Nothing today we had to take Barley and Berry for their boosters at the vets.
But yesterday i potted up this container with heathers. 3 different flowering ones, winter,
early spring and later spring, also potted up the daffodils.
