A lovely dark colour @Allotment Boy.

I got a bargain too when I logged onto David Austin's site. Selected 3 GJ bare root roses and was given an unexpected £6 odd off for a bulk order. Better get cracking on making sure the new bed rose bed is prepped and ready as delivery is due mid-November.

Wonder if a 20-20 ft wisteria will go through the shredder!!

Potting up like a demented robot for my last charity plant sale. I am trying to get everything done before the really bad weather appears. Slight snag, after leaning over a barrow of compost for 5 hours my left arse cheek has decided to go into a spasm and very ( insert stronger than very) sore. This getting old is complete pants. I used to be able to pot up for about 9 hours with no bother at all. Hopefully it will be better in the morning and I can continue.

Know what you mean @hailbopp re bits being ******* sore! Hope you're a bit better today and can finish your potting up. I can't function without a heat pad on my back for while in the morning. I've had problems for 50 years with it. It gets to the point where you think something's wrong when it isn't hurting. It's my knees now, but a lot of that is from hillwalking. Difficult when you still feel young in your mind but your body disagrees!
I don't know if you ever listen to Out of Doors on Radio Scotland, but it comes from Beechgrove, and they were saying it had been pretty wild overnight. Both presenters live in the north east.
I did nothing yesterday as I was out most of the afternoon, so it was just a couple of bits and pieces after my walk.
We've had a lovely sunrise a few mins ago, but there's some dark clouds too. It's supposed to be pretty decent today, albeit windy, but I should get my honeysuckle potted up, and then see what else there is that can be done after my walk. I should really check on all the little seedlings and cuttings in the growhouse. Not looked at them for a few days. If nothing else, I can watch the birds.

Actually had a productive morning weeding yesterday, and putting out plants that should have been done ages ago. Why, though, do I weed and THEN find my gardening gloves? My hands had to be scrubbed raw to get the dirt out. As my mother and I used to joke - oh we'll make bread, that'll clean them! :rolleyespink:

              Hi,

A beautiful sunny but chilly morning and NO RAIN or WIND. What a stark contrast from yesterday afternoon as I battled against dire weather whilst in the garden planting.

I've just returned From Hampsons Garden Center near Wakefield; after planting yesterday there was still a bare patch so I've bought 18 wallflowers and a pack of ten tulip bulbs the lot costing £12.99; the wallflowers were three trays of six at £10 the bulbs at half price.

I think it must have been @Logan's bulb planting which rubbed off on me because the bulbs were an impulse purchase. :)

I'm warming up with a mug of tea and a Morrisins puff pastry mince pie; lifes little luxuries.

              Kind regards, Col.

Hubby has been clearing up after not one, but two pigeons were massacred by a sparrowhawk yesterday ....

                  Hi,

                  I wonder if I'll ever thaw out; I feel frozen after just planting the Suger Rush Mixed wallflowers and Cape Town tulip bulbs;

                  25 Oct 25_577.JPG
Lots of planting yesterday and today; it should look nice once it fills out.

                  25 Oct 25_579.JPG
The garden swallows plants up even in this bottom section. The tree stump is the remains of an 80' tall conifer I took down years ago.

                  25 Oct 25_578.JPG
Here's what I'm faced with; I was sure the soil was grass free when I planted this ground cover but no the grass has to spoil it; the grass isn't playing fair when it does this and the ground cover isn't helping. :wallbanging:

                  Kind regards, Col.

Trying to get ready to reassemble the frame round the Lemons but we keep getting rsin showers so not getting anywhere. Trouble is its forecast to get quite cold the next couple of nights. I might have to resort to fleece for now.

I spent some time this morning pulling out all the long grass that has taken over the area where the box hedge used to be.Filled a flexitub with it and put it in the compost bin. Then this afternoon I planted out a new Eleagnus I bought for that space. It's been on the patio for the last few days but being very top-heavy in its pot kept blowing over.
Still haven't decided whether to go all Eleagnus or a mix of shrubs to replace the box. When I went to B&Q they only had one, and I reckon it was the same one for several weeks, waiting there for its "forever home". I shall try the garden centre this week and make a decision based on what they've got.
Other than that I've been collecting leaves and cutting back brambles. The neighbourhood cats have decided that leaf litter is as good as as cat litter and I had to spend some time disinfecting my outside shoes yesterday.

I've started cutting down my lovely wisteria as needs must but I do feel sad, it was beautiful in full bloom this year. However it was getting out of hand and needed constant pruning as well as the worry about the wall it was tied to. I have decided to replace it with a rose bed so yesterday ordered 3 GJ roses from DA. Two for the bed itself and one in a pot on the terrace above.

Only cut some swiss chard this morning after waiting for a friend to help sort out a plumbing issue. Why is it so difficult to get trades people to answer/reply to messages about asking for help? Had the same problem when we needed to have a fence taken down and a new one put up. The hours we spend on the phones trying to get somebody to respond and then come out to look at the job and then maybe do the job!

I added some plants to a small pond that I installed in the garden earlier this week, constructed a ramp with cobbles and added some logs and cobbles around the edges. I also created a log pile nearby and hung up a new caged bird seed feeder on a bracket on the fence. It can be seen from all windows at the back of the house, as well as by the pigeons on the roof who won’t be able to get near it . I then cleared all the leaves off the paving and steps, before a downpour of rain ended any further activity.

                              Dont count upon it !
Thought I'd cracked this problem until I watched a magpie fly into mine, beating it with a wing until the seed tumbled out, to be subsequently scoffed by the resident pigeons. I just know they pay him to do it.......

Have you grown GJ before? From my own experience with it ( gift for mum) it were next to impossible to keep as a shrub to vigorous and gangly, ended up making an archway for it makes a lovely smallish climber. A few of the Austins shrub roses are good small climbers.
