The old electrics worked perfectly for all of the 50 years. Although it had its own RCD it was also on a separate fuse in the internal fuse box with it's own RCD as well. The sockets themselves had insulated screw on caste iron covers that were waterproof. All installed by a professional. :blue thumb:

The new lot will be only two sockets as I don't need the four that I used to have. So something small but professional. The power comes to the greenhouse from the loft of our bungalow on an armoured cable on a catenary wire.

      Hi,

Thanks @shiney Old things were made to last especially machinery.

I hope the weather holds out for your greenhouse erection.

Sad your old “ girl” had to go but she certainly did her stuff for you. Hope the new greenhouse is a success. I wouldn’t go past my Rhino ( 20x8ft). Had it for about 10 years now and has withstood 120mph+ gales that some of my trees did not! Will look forward to seeing photos of the new black! greenhouse.

Thanks. The erection won't be until December but the taking down should be tomorrow, subject to the weather. The skip will arrive sometime tomorrow, so if it is late we shall have to start stacking things and transporting them later. New one being delivered in two and a half weeks.

I have now also cut back the roses in the bed (15' x 3') alongside the greenhouse as it is very thorny and they will need to be out of the way for the installers of the new one.

I'm also looking forward to the progress of this thread.

An emotional goodbye for you and Mrs S Shiney but it's served you well. :)

I'm surprised the power board was still functioning, but things were made to last back in the days of yore.

I have found this thread very interesting and I look forward to reading about the progress of the new greenhouse.

I miss my old greenhouse but I don't have much opportunity to use one now as I to and fro between England and France too much to look after it properly.

To be honest, I'd prefer black to green @CarolineL , as I have quite a bit of black in the garden, but also grey, so a metal would always be preferable to green. I did consider it, but it would actually stand out far more if it was a green one. It's a site right next to the house where it gets the most light/sun, and there isn't anywhere else without removing a lot of planting.
I can understand you taking the cheaper offer @shiney. It's a huge outlay. It'll be great once it's all in situ. I can understand that a green one would blend in well, if there's a lot of greenery around or nearby, but a black, or dark grey one will do the same. :blue thumb:
Having somewhere for keeping all the 'stuff' is the biggest problem when you've removed it - it's surprising how much you can fit in, as we see in your pix! Not so bad if it's waterproof items though.

Gives you chance to sort through stuff, if you're anything like me half the stuff in the greenhouse could easily be stored outside anyway, or in my case it needs throwing away, but never seem to get round to clearing it out.
I wish I'd bought a bigger greenhouse back around 1980 when I got my first Ali one, but it was more about finding space without dominating the garden, plus cost of course, at the time.
Did you tell us what make of greenhouse the new one is @shiney ,maybe I missed it.
I'm sure once you get it all set up you'll both wonder why you didn't do it earlier always sad to see the old memories go, but onwards and upwards as they say.

@pete The old one was a red cedar Alton (excellent) and the new is a Robinsons Rosette. Hopefully it will fit the same footprint otherwise we shall have trouble.

That anthracite colour looks like an excellent choice @shiney :blue thumb:. I'd have paid extra to have that colour over the green one. Well, maybe not an extra £2000 .

25% off anthracite at the moment, its cheaper than the green, which doesn't look too bad in my opinion as its a very dark green.
When the mention of green came up I thought it was brilliant glow in the dark type green, kind of luminous.

Interesting thread. I too have an Alton cedar greenhouse. Mine is only a baby at 20 years old. They say you don't need to treat cedar but I have used a spirit based treatment on it , as much to refresh the colour as anything. My only regret is I bought an Octaganal one ( much smaller than yours) and wish I'd gone for a standsrd rectangle. The way prices have gone no way would I replace it like for like now.

Simon and I started work at 7.30 this morning. He did most of the work and I was his gopher as most of it was too much heavy work and also required some awkward sawing and use of an angle grinder as well as having to work up near the roof.

We got a lot done in the six hours he was here but another day's work should finish it unless the paving needs adjusting or concreting. We've started loading the skip which turned up at midday.

Photos later, when I have time. :)

I will be following this thread and can’t wait to see the new greenhouse.
It’s always emotional if we take farewell from something that was with us for a very long time.
I wouldn’t be so much worried about the weather unless you don’t get minus degrees and snow.
Our guy from Eden came in short trousers and t-shirt and it was 19th of November, 5c, and our garden in total shade
                                These guys are tough.
