My old Draper leaf blower/suction/mulcher has stopped doing any of those things. The motor is running perfectly well; I spent a long time last autumn clearing wet debris that had been clogging it up, so it looks fine at the top end, just nothing happening when I switch it on other than a healthy purr. It owes me nothing, and I'd have just bought a new one but giving it a final try the lever switching between blow and sunction feels really loose, which I thought I'd have noticed before now. I'd like to fix that and see if that does the trick, but it looks like I'll have to disassemble the whole thing with literally dozens of screws to unscrew to be able to get at the one simple lever. Though I've always been useless about taking things to bits I don't mind giving it a go, but is there maybe a shortcut I'm missing, and would the lever likely just need repositioning? Advice very welcome.

Since you've had no replies I'll make an uninformed suggestion! I suspect it may be something snapped off inside on the lever, so it may need jury-rigging. Draw an outline of the base on some cardboard, and as you remove each screw, poke it through the cardboard in the equivalent place. Then you won't mix them up when replacing. Careful to use the right screwdriver to unscrew as you don't want to marmalise the screw head - Philips and pozidrive are a bit different. Also take lots of photos - it'll help.
If the part is broken, I would take a clear photo of it against a plain background and use Google lens - it might find you a replacement. I've found it useful for tool batteries etc.

Thank you Caroline. I have to take a short break but ASAP I will try as you suggest - I like the cardboard idea. You're so right about the different screw heads. Care is needed.

      Fingers crossed for you!
I only learned the cardboard idea on a recent training course for maintaining hedge trimmers and strimmers. I had tried just laying them out, but the screws always rolled around!
