Today's view down the slope, featuring snake bark maple, bergenia, mahonia, and in the bottom right corner of the garden the pond area with large mounds of geranium "Joseph Green", foxgloves, persicaria and purple toadflax. The mahonia is planted half way down the slope where it has plenty of space to grow as big as it wants. There is one around the corner from me which is the same height as the bungalow it belongs to, so hopefully in a few years mine will be dominating this view.

Hardy impatiens. No flowers again this year, but it's well over a metre tall and the leaves are wonderful

@CanadianLori There are a number of Impatiens that are hardy over here, however I'm not sure how they would do with you. Maybe one from a colder part of China or the Himalayas would work for example Impatiens stenantha, which is supposed to be hardy down to -15°C.

                            Oh good grief @CanadianLori - that's 10 c LOWER than my freezer! (Can't say twice as cold @pete - temps start at -273c !)
I'm afraid I can never remember which impatiens it is @NigelJ - I'll have to look again on Farmyard Nurseries website
I've just looked - can't find it online. I'll have to visit them again to find it in a polytunnel

Frozen is frozen. I doubt there is much difference in ground temperature regardless if the air is -10C, -20C or further down. Finnish climate is very like Canadian, and Peonies, Roses, Clematis and Phlox are very traditional.

It's the between- season plants that the UK climate excels in, but are rare in harsher climates. Take decorative Heathers, in Finland everyone buys them for winter colour because they stay looking good when frozen solid. Popular in window boxes and graves.

On a positive note, there is nothing rivalling spring feeling when a stream breaks through the ice and the first Coltsfoot opens amongst the drifts of snow :)

@CarolineL My non flowerer is Impatiens insignis and your picture reminds me of I balsanae, which I moved this year as it was being bullied by I tinctora. I tinctora is a thug, but I like it and at 6 ft tall the tubers must be enormous.
