thanks everyone who gave list of autumn/ winter flowering plants. l will look online to see if suitable for my borders as l dont have car to go to garden centres. We bought more pks of mix pink colour tulip bulbs on sale at B&M ..now got 30 to plant for my spring front door containers. might get some crocus to interplant with them nk week..l think muscari would look nice as well. Husband did a few min in garden making the runner beans metal arches more secure for over winter, l could only watch as trip to town worn me out :( We have decided the area we are clearing/transplanting of overgrown & too large shrubs by bedroom french doorwindows will best be laid with fake artificial lawn..We want something low mantinence now getting elderly plus l was thinking the fake lown would look nice plus more comfortable to walk on as we want to put our garden metal swing on this area. Then the plan is to have a l ft border all around the fake grass area to put some diff seasonal plants with some colour that l will be able to see from my bedroom as a lot of days im bedbound with my severe M.E/CFS. The garden and patio has been slowly getting sorted this yr so l now have a nice view from french door windows in the bedroom. lv got a nice bench nk to the doors that has a border we planted up last spring with loads of scented bulbs :)

Hi @Peaceful Gardener I hope you are both feeling ok. I used to live in Nottinghamshire (village outside Newark) and we didn't have snow as often as I expected to. But when we did, it was in spades! So I hope it behaves itself for you, and doesn't block you off, as it did for our village a couple of times.

Checked the salvia cuttings in the propagator most are now rooted and can be moved out next week.
In the greenhouse things are ticking over nicely three Dahlia species are still in full leaf and a couple may flower this year.

I emptied out the pot I grew the cup and saucer vine in and was amazed at the amount of root - it was one white solid mass all around the outside, and there were roots poking out of the bottom too.
I broke it all up and used my soil riddle to extract a bucketful of reusable compost, which I then used part of to plant up a pot of tulip bulbs.
I have ordered a bare root apricot tree which I'm hoping to receive in the next week or so, so I spent some time preparing the area where I'm going to plant it.
I looked over the fence into my neighbour's garden and saw a huge dead rat lying in the middle of their paving. They don't go out there much so it'll likely be there for a while ...

                  Hi,

Many thanks @Peaceful Gardener Unfortunately it's likely the weather will get worse all the way to springtime when I see the daffodils poking through the snow at Bretton as I drive to the M1 motorway; it's always a sign of better things ahead.

Your husband was bang on; it's been a gale up here too with 42mph gusts of wind this morning and 33mph gusts this afternoon; it's been a bitterly cold wind too; I could only manage an hour in the garden fighting the wind and cold this morning then an hour and a quarter this afternoon; I'm now tired and feeling worn out but happy I've done a bit more work; it's so tiring working in such extreme conditions but the alternatve is to give up and I'm no quitter when I start something. Just one full week of dry; calm 10C would be a huge help. Tomorrow is rain all day?

                  Kind regards, Col.

We’ve had a nasty West wind blowing here today making it very cold indeed. Add some heavy rain and it’s a typical November day. No proper gardening done here but I did buy some small packets of daffodils from the local supermarket yesterday and got them planted out. Whilst having a quick look round the ground after that, I noticed four of OH’s favourite tulips( just because his late father had them and he liked the, Other than that we are not terribly keen on them). have broken ground, hurrah! We’re both really chuffed that they’ve survived.

                        Hi,

Any gardening today will be done at periscope depth; 6C and 95% rain all day; the garden looks better wet than dry though but I've so much work I want to do. The terrific wind of the last two days has dropped now; it's just so miserable; dark & wet.

After lots of days of rain it's amazing how dry the soil is two inches down; it's dust and the wind made working on my hands and knees very unpleasant indeed; water run off on the steep garden is rapid and it quickly dries out. Tomorrow is forecast 6C and 5% rain so I'll be in with a chance?

I'm collecting a garden riddle from Screwfix today; I've got lots of couch grass sods I dug up whilst recent wall and steps building also I've stopped bagging up the couch grass rhizomes I'm digging out; these are being piled up by the hut and I'll put them through the riddle once the meadow is cleared; the riddled soil can be returned to the garden. I'm keen to get this job done but this time of year the weather is not the best for gardening.

I've received a text from Screwfix; the riddle is now delayed.

Here's an experimental video I created 9 years ago using the car sat nav and it clearly shows what the rear garden was like then and how steep it is; the trees were up to 80' tall; we liked the trees calling it our mini park but the trees became a liabilty during storms and high wind; I decided to fell them whilst the garden could still accommodate their felled length; with neighbours each side and a lane to the top of the garden I learned a lot about felling trees exactly where intended and fortunately there was no collateral damage caused but an awful lot of heavy work involved working on my own.

                        Kind regards, Col.

The heavy rain apparently got delayed on its way here so I was able to spend the morning digging.

Now that the kennel is gone, the area will become a sloped dry bed for alpines, trailing rosemary, grasses and a Viburnum that had better just accept it's dry and sunny. Roots down deep dear, stop whining. :heehee:

                          KennelNov.png

                          kenneldigrobin.png

First things first, digging down a spade deep unearthed two fence post stumps with massive concrete boots, over 30 old fashioned bricks (hooray, I will use them for a raised bed- old bricks look very nice to me:hapfeet:), various paving slabs and yet more round stones I promptly relocated into the pond.

I think the mountain of soil dug from elsewhere in the garden might mostly disappear into the sloped area, minus the bad lot of rubbish and evil looking yellow sub-soil (sub-clay?) dug up from under the site that is now my pond. There's some coal too for a cold day

I mixed in grit for the base level and have some bags of sand and compost to mix with the top half. Clay is lush but does benefit from a bit of an add in.

My late grandfather would agree, after making a vegetable plot in clay soil and digging in leafmould, sand , straw, compost and whatever to break it up every spring the resulting soil was great. It only took about 50 years.

Robin thinks this is a wonderful household and took his time posing for Christmassy photos sitting on the fork handle. :) (No, I didn't have my phone so just pretended to take photos and told Robin I will post them on social media and he'll be famous . )

My new apricot tree arrived today, it looks good. It's now soaking in a bucket and I will plant it tomorrow.
Between the showers I cut down the persicaria, pruned the gooseberries and jostaberry and picked up a few of the magnolia leaves from my neighbour's huge tree.

Have just finished planting out my tree, and devising various barricades in case the foxes decide to try digging it up again!

                                Hi,

                                It's going to feel like 3C up the garden after dinner but it's a glorious sunny day so far AND NO RAIN;

                                Site Dundrick neck gaiter.
                                Site Hislop padded trapper hat.

I've just collected both the above from Screwfix; I'm fighting this cold weather and won't be driven indoors by it. The 1/2" wire mesh riddle I ordered on Friday from Screwfix is delayed so I've been given a £10 voucher off my next purchase which is jolly decent of them.

The strong wind has also dropped so it might be pleasant in the sunshine as I resume evicting the couch grass rhizomes. I bet there's still a breeze up there though.

                                Kind regards, Col.
